One thing I noticed in the injuries to McAdoo, Sexton and Roczen is while nasty, they don't seem to be super-hard hits. Yet the riders are injured. I believe this is because SX track surfaces are so hard. If you have ever walked or ridden one, they are as hard as concrete. It's definitely not like landing in a loamy berm. Maybe some of the industry people can ring in on this. But the asphalt-like hardness of SX tracks is one reason riders get hurt so much.
need to be wearing back protectors and shoulder pads. deathcross.
I hear you, but what can you do about it?
There's not a lot of depth down to the plywood and the tracks already rut up significantly. I'm not saying your wrong, I just don't know if there's a solution.
Seems to be a case of 'it is what it is.'
I agree with McAdoo hit but it was weird and fell pretty far on his shoulder. But not sure where you are getting the Kenny and Chase crashes. They busted their ass and hit hard.
is sexton hurt?
The Shop
I fell the new training and body type the riders have now is not helping in this area. All the riders are super lean with little muscle mass. When they fall there is no muscle to protect them.
I have not raced since 1984. I can tell you this I have had crashes where I flipped and flopped all over the place I jumped up ready to go and the bike was not ridable. On the other hand I have had what seemed like a little crash and was at the doctor getting repaired and the bike was perfect. I think it all comes down to how you hit, if you get hit by your bike or another riders bike. Luck plays a lot into it also. It is a brutal sport.
Check out RV’s incident in Seattle 2012. Slow speed front end washout and he’s out for the rest of SX and all of MX with a knee injury.
You could see Roczen’s right leg plant and turn when he hit. It didn’t look that bad, but you could see a slight impact.
We do not see last weekend the same.
What would you consider a super hard hit?
Yeah but Kenny and Sexton are two of the buffest dudes in the pros.
Also Hammacker got hurt and he’s huge
Forkner on the pavement. I'm not saying they didn't hit hard- but McAdoo's didn't look that bad- slow speed etc. I have hit AX dirt myself and got knocked out just going into a turn. All I am saying is the dirt is like concrete.
What's more baffling is how violent some of the hits are that these guys come away from with no major injuries. How you hit is generally more important than the surface you're hitting, even pushing the front end in a sand corner can result in a broken clavicle at slow speeds if you just land wrong. This topic made me remember this old Tortelli crash, dirt's pretty hard
I've had horrendous crashes and walked away to make the next moto - and then tore my knee apart loading a toolbox into my truck.
You never know.
Seems like we're all in agreement; you can crash hard and be OK, and then you can dislocate your shoulder twice without crashing, like I've done.
I've crashed hard and only been bruised up vs. breaking my wrist entering the track, slid my front tire out over a partially visible pvc water pipe. Stuff happens.
I know it’s been said before but these guys blasting around WFO with nothing more than boots, helmet and a pair of pajamas doesn’t help either.i think if I was a team owner/manager paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to these guys I would have a maximum protective gear clause in the contracts.dress for the crash, not the ride
Maximum gear is going to reduce range of motion = possibly more crashes. Just a thought.
