Does anyone else struggle whipping/scrubbing one way, vs the other?
Example. I can scrub and whip pretty hard to the left with no problem and it feels very natural.
But when I go off something and try to whip it to the right or scrub something, I just can’t bring the bike as low to the ground; and a whip going to the right just feels very un natural and awkward no matter what.
Poll
Where's the option for "I whip it no ways"?
Lol you’re right I forgot to put that in there. Not letting me edit the poll
I whip it real good
Wait you guys can whip
The Shop
Thanks Devo.
Better question: if you pull the bars right and the rear of the bike goes to the left, which way are whipping/scrubbing?
Beat me to it...
I wonder how many people here don't even know the band.
This! 👆 OR at least “I only whip by accident”! Ha!
Two years ago while riding on a semi-muddy Sunday at our local MX track, I hit one of the bigger jumps on the track and actually slid up the face, launching me into THE sweetest flat whip I have EVER done! *Some-how* I managed to panic rev my way to a big-time save and rode a few more laps before we pulled off for a break… My buddy says “Dude, that is THE sickest whip I have ever seen you throw” and I had NO choice but to admit that it was 100% BY ACCIDENT and I was actually so close to crashing that it scared the crap out of me!
I would give anything if by some miracle, there had been video or a still pic of it, because I could never do something that cool on purpose or do it again! 😎 👍❗️
When I could whip it half decent in my 20’s and early 30’s it just depended on the track and jump. I would get stuck in one direction at times. At my best I could go both ways ok. Was just a flow thing.
Hey, I know bad music (if you can call it that) when I hear it, no matter what decade it's from.
Unfortunately, it's gotten so bad since the 80's it makes Devo seem legendary in comparison.
You're welcome for the derail.
(...before the cream sits out too long, you must whip it...)
I can only throw it to the left.. only way i can to the right is if it's a very steep seat bounce type jump, like an old arenacross catapult.. been that way for 20 years..
In an extra twist of being incoordinated I can only scrub to the right and can’t whip either way… It makes jumps out of left handers interesting to say the least!
I can whip left and scrub right.
(Or maybe it’s the other way around? I’m with Zehn)
Have you seen the shit where people take off leaning to the left, bike goes towards the right, and then whips the opposite way of where it looked like the bike was going. That shit blows my mind lol. Obviously can vice versa with the direction of the whip.
I only feel comfortable whipping to the left. I think its pretty normal to feel more comfortable going a certain way, even for the pros. I think it's similar to snowboarding/surfing/biking where you feel more comfortable with a certain leg forward.
Neither. I can save it from being kicked either way which seems to be the limits of my coolness.
I can't whip it but I sure can beat it!
Pit Row
I can’t whip to save my life but I know what you’re are talking about. If a jump was on a corner it feels natural to jump to the right but it feels totally alien to the left.
I prefer leaning left, but can go the other way on good days.
Short pecker syndrome...
Too bad it's the only thing you can beat.
It would be interesting to see if whipping left or right correlates to regular vs. goofy foot.
I could whip easier to the left, putting my right foot out in front and ride goofy foot. Makes sense to me.
I always liked to whip the bike the "normal" way. Leaning the bike left and whipping the tail right. But I would normally do my scrubs to the left. But really fast and hardest scrubs were back to the right.
Edit: I think some of you are confusing whip direction with what side you lean a whip in the comments. The term "whip" refers to a whippertail or tail whip, meaning whipping the tail to a certain direction. Whip to the "right", whips the rear tire out to the right. And a "left" whip, whips the tail out to the left. It doesn't mean the side you lean the bike.
Right whip:
Left whip:
In the sense that I can't really whip, yes I can do it both ways equally well!
The real question is: when you whip to the left, what direction is your rear tire hanging out? ^Nrosso, your position has not been confirmed and agreed upon. Lots of people (like myself) consider a whip to go in the direction you would be turning. This is one of those Vital arguments like the seat bounce or the quad over three mounds of dirt (which is a triple).
Aztalan?
I mean I said what I said. Its a whippertail, or a tail whip. We just call it a whip for short. So which side did the tail of the bike go to? Its been settled long ago..

I used to get whipped in a circle by my Grandma!
I’ve ridden out a few of those in my lifetime. Kind of a “brown shorts” whip.
I always wished they were on purpose, except the brown shorts part.
I'm in the 'no way' camp nowadays, used to be mildly to the left 😂
Same story with BMX, 180's/270's/360's, airing a quarter pipe, even just carving a bowl or something, to the left always felt more natural (initially wayyy more natural as a novice).
Probably a similar mental/physical hang up with how some skateboarders skate opposite.
See? I don't think that thread settles it. I will give you the benefit that the voting (by erroneous, mislead cherubs) seems to favor the opposite opinion to mine.
It would be interesting to put together an opinion profile that examines how many people subscribe to the same or different opinions and whether those line up in patterns. Such as, "Do people who think that this is whipping to the right believe that three jumps can be a quad and that the seat bounce is not real?"
