Race fuel that smells like poop

Just opened a can of U4.4 and poured it into my empty tank, fired the bike up and ran it for a bit… it smells like sh*t…. nothing like you’d imagine a “race fuel” smelling like. This batch isn’t on the recall list, and it was manufactured June of last year, which I think vp said this stuff will stay good for over a year sealed in the can.

I don’t really care about how my exhaust smells, my concern is do I have bad fuel? Could whatever additive put in the fuel that gives it a “good” smell have gone bad?

I’ve ran U4.4 and thought it smelled great.

U4 normally smells like perfume to me. One of the best smelling fuels.

That’s what everyone says (it smells great). And this definitely doesn’t which is why I’m concerned there’s something wrong with it lol. I know smell is subjective but I feel like us motor heads have a similar taste when it comes to this stuff lol

Take it back and get a new can.

Slightly off topic but my rider, his chick and myself got evicted because of me storing U4.4 in the garage.

We had a two bedroom in Wildomar, LA and I'd build the race bikes in the garage. We hit the road to do the outdoors and I'd left a few cans In the garage along with two practice bikes with VP in their tanks. I'm used to the smell....I like the damn smell but not the neighbors. It made them sick or so they claimed.

We had all sorts of shit, the one neighbor was wanting to sue us.

We had to move out...my rider and myself hit the road again and left his chick behind to deal with finding a new place and moving out. Hahahaha.

VP or U4.4 has never smelt like poop so something must be up with your unit.

U4.4 has a recall on it. Check the batch number and return it.
VP hasn't solved their oxygenation issues yet. I'd run non VP race gas or if VP is only option then run MS98 or VP110 depending on your octane needed for your compression.

He said his fuel isn't on the recall list in the first post my man 👍

It may be perfectly fine, but if you're paying for VP you're paying for repeatable and dependable consistency between the cans of fuel you use to out into a bike with a pricey motor and no AFR/fuel-type monitoring.

I can't think of any ok reason it would smell that 'off' so while I'm not one for returning things in general, I'd be draining my tank and returning the can.

Race fuel smelling like crap ain't normal, especially if it's not on the recall list. VP says it should be good for over a year, but who knows. But I don't think there is much of a problem.

Bike seems to run fine, but only rode it around the yard for a couple minutes. I don’t know how much luck I would have returning it because it “doesn’t smell right”. Maybe I could contact vp and see what they say. I live in New York unfortunately so there’s only one place I’ve found that sells U4.4 because it can’t be shipped here, and they are almost two hours away from me so I don’t really have the option of trying different distributors or buying another can that easily.

Is it U4.4 e or Reg?

Did you switch oils also? I’m only asking because your crankcase could still have oil from the last gas still in the crankcase and could make it smell different.

No… using the same oil I’ve always used. I brought the bike to the track today and it definitely felt a little bit like a dog… I am still waiting for twisted development to send me a vortex ecu, so currently using the stock one with the rich coupler… I find it odd that I never once had that “lean pop” that I’d expect from a heavily oxygenated fuel… and the bike would stall out at times at an idle.. hopefully I’ll have the ecu by next week and we’ll see if that makes a difference.

Ah I was thinking you were on a 2 stroke. It definitely sounds like something is up with the fuel

Yeah I probably should have mentioned that.. it’s a 2020 rmz250… thing is slow.. not that I’m too fast for it, more like too heavy lol. But I own it now so trying to make the best of it. Im really hoping there’s nothing wrong with it cause I bought two pals of it lol. Best thing to do is email VP I guess and see what they have to say.

If you get the holeshot, it might be good. Keep everyone well behind you.

You’re probably got parasomia (distorted smellfunction)  caused by a Covid-infection.

I emailed VP and got a phone call from them the next day. They are sending me a container to send them a sample of the fuel. So we’ll see how that goes. Whether this batch is affected in any way it’s nice to see they are taking this whole thing pretty seriously and seem to be making it right to people.

Another reason to just run pump 91, never had an issue with it!

I ran pump gas for years and never had a problem either. I have a two stroke that’s been modified a bit that needs it, and my 250 four stroke I’m just trying to get as much as I can out of it as I’m a little on the bigger side for it, and I do have it mapped for it. I’m thinking of switching to renegade for the four stroke… somewhat “reasonably” priced and they ship it to your door for free from what I can tell.

What kind of poop exactly? The smells have a wide spectrum of flavors tbh. Without specifics its hard to know if the gas is bad
