Was it the ease of jetting? The stabile and predictable chassis? The abundance of parts? Maybe the all set up tips and tricks readily found? Reliability? Probably the SSS suspension, everyone hates that.

I do not hate YZ250s per se, but I have never ridden one that I actually like and I have never considered owning one. My YZ125 on the other hand is the bees knees.

I'm a Yamaha guy.  Currently have a '22 yz250f and a '23 yz125.  Have had yz250's and a '21 yz250x.  Had a few affairs with Orange and Red bikes but always come back to blu. For some gawd damn reason I bought a '24 KTM 250xc a couple months ago.  I really wanted e start, TBI and the idea of no spooge.

I've got about 10 hours on the KTM and by all accounts its a pretty good bike.  Handles great and the spring forks/shock are actually great!  Though I've been thinking the efi feels a little dirty or rich in the low to midrange rpms.  Cleans out well and flat rips.  Very fun engine.

This past weekend I was able to do a 50 mile trail ride on some really rocky technical trails that averaged about 15 mph.  At the end of the ride there was so much spooge dripping all over the place and under the rear fender it looks like a two stroke bukkake scene!

Not gonna lie....slight regret over just not getting a new yz250x.  Was thinking of adding a TSP head anyway for a touch more low end grunt and now a tune to get things cleaned up.

.40v base(idle knob out, cable disconnected), .510 idle. Can take the base towards .35v to lean it if needed, run good fuel.

The computer at the dealer has green and red bars. Ktm wants it set in the green but one end of the bar is leaner than the other. My dealer set it towards the lean end of the green bar. It is all done electronically not by rotating the tps like you see on YouTube.

I'm considering picking up a new YZ250 or 250 SX. Which one is more comfortable for a taller rider (6'2")? I was never able to get very comfortable on my 2022 KTM 450 so if the new KTM chassis is not any roomier than the 22 I'll probably snag a new YZ.

The new KTM chassis is a little better for taller guys than the older one was.   The newer YZ body/seat (2022+) is also better for taller guys than the older one was.

I hear ya brother. I wanted to like the yz so badly, been on Austrian smokers since 2017 love the bikes but lots of things I hate too. I made up in my mind that I wanted to switch to the YZ just to try something new for a bit. Thank God I rode one because I absolutely hated it. I got right back on my KTM 300 and never looked back.

It's the excessive vibration and and lack of front end traction I struggle with on the YZ's.

They do have their positives, very light feeling, good power and fun bikes to ride but there's no denying the KTM is a more refined package. Although my experience is based off of the 19-22 generation bikes and I have yet to try a TBI.

I’ve had a few yz250s. I’m not crazy about them either. Good in the bush though. I liked my 2016 250 sx better- and that was pre counter balanced engine.

Just a little update for anyone interested.

I now have 35 hours on the 250xc.  I've added a TSP mid compression head and tune plus got the ERM module to play with.  First, adding the head and tune did seem to clean things up a bit.  Also seems to add a bit of torque as it seems to carry a gear high and does not fall on it's face when stabbing the throttle.  Happy with the performance and the bike in general riding more open Central Oregon high dez.

My local trails just opened up for spring season, Western Oregon, 400' to 2100' elevation, tight single track, rocks, roots, hills.  I've got about 100 miles in the last few days and have noticed a couple different things.  There is a weird spot between 4000 and 5000 rpm, almost a lean condition or run-on when the engine comes down from higher rev's.  I've played with mapping a touch and it seems actually leaning the fuel map helps, but doesn't eliminate this.  Still drips like a gangbang queen.

But the bike is fast through the trees.  I'm slaying KOM's on a bunch of strava segments.  My son is thinking about getting into the woods game and will probably end up with a new yz250x.  Will be fun to compare.

Get a YZ unless you have to have electric start then get a Beta 300 RX.  With the lower Beta fees as opposed to high ass Yamaha dealer fees you will come out close to the same if buying new.

I literally had a guy approach me today after riding just to tell me that my bike sounded strong. Get the YZ250. This bike is too good.

Looking at getting a new bike in 2024 and I'm really considering a modern 250 2 stroke specifically a yz250 or husky tc250. I'm a yamaha guy and I currently have a YZ250f and a YZ125 in the garage. I haven't rode a fuel injected 250 before so I'm wondering how they compare to the carbed yz250. Obviously the Yamaha will be a bit cheaper and imo has the better suspension with the kyb spring forks, but I'd really enjoy having fuel injection and not having to mess with jetting all the time and I've read that the fuel injection gives the 250 more of a controllable power curve which I think I'd enjoy. Just looking to get some opinions out of people who have owned/rode both. For what its worth I'm a 170lb vet rider.

I bleed orange and have since I was a little kid.  Having said that I wouldn't buy a new KTM 2-stroke mx bike with the TBI unless there was a way to convert it back to carbed.  Seriously, who wanted a TBI mx bike?  The swung and miss on this one, no one wanted this it makes things more complicated on a bike that people want because of its simplicity.  Get a YZ.

Well I'm glad I'm already a Yamaha guy and getting a YZ250 for the first time. Haven't had a 2 stroke since my '03 85, and I couldn't ride that bike well at all. But very happy to hear these comments reaffirming the choice I was going to go with once I get mine sometime this summer.

My 23 Yz 250 is the best bike I’ve owned to date. Was worried about no rubbers on the stock clamp at first, as I’m a vet guy who rides a lot of hard pack. I’ve gotten used to it and the kyb sss make the experience more enjoyable. Stone cold reliable bike. 30 hours on mine with an apex head. Travel all over Montana riding and racing and have yet to touch the jetting after setting it up according to Apex recommendations.

As much as I like this bike, curiosity about the Beta 300rx is killing me. I prefer the simplicity of a keihin carb.

That's great feedback on the yZ250!

I haven't ridden the Beta 300rx but i'd look out for a demo day if you can.

Ride and own whatever you feel most comfortable on.

I rode the Beta 250RR (enduro) and it felt like a 2012-era 250SX to me with similar handling but a little less power. So I'd say it's possible that performance of the 300RX is going to be pretty similar to your YZ with a couple of minor exceptions ... that's why I suggest riding one.

I've had multiple yz 250's over the years but have been on a yz450f since 2021. I did a beta demo day a couple weeks back and rode the 300 rx. The chassis and suspension was nice but the engine felt pretty lifeless. No hit anywhere and then just went flat on top. Maybe it's cos I'm used to the 450 but I wasn't impressed with the motor

22mm clamps on the YZ250 takes care of front end traction.

Port/polish, higher compression and a couple degrees advanced on the timing with some race fuel and it’s a ripper

How… do I buy one of these?! I’ve always heard of fantics, but never bothered to research them. Just did a quick search and they seem hard to come by, but this thing seems to check all of the boxes!

Did you just say stone cold reliable and 30 hours in the same sentence? 🤣

30 hours is the new threshold for reliability. Thats cute.

They aren't 'supposed' to be sold in the US I don't think? Part of their deal with Yamaha?

Pasha got one but obviously that dude has money, connections, some serious will to do get shit done.

I imagine for most people it would be a headache importing a dirtbike and I don't know how much work it would be registering it for trails and stuff if you wanted to?

Last weekend I put a few laps on my buddies 23 KTM 300sx. He had the ecu reflashed for the newest update. Can’t remember who did it. While the bike was indeed fast it wasn’t uncontrollable. I could only go about 60-70% on it. I just did not gel with the feeling of the chassis in the corners. Obviously it’s set up for him & not me but I felt like I was tip toeing it around. Just something about the YZ250 that’s so appealing to me. I got back and mine and was instantly happy to be back at home. Of course I’ve been on this bike for 10 years now. IMO get the YZ with a few mods and you’ll be super happy. Pipe/silencer, Boyesen Radvalve, Apex head, GYTR flywheel, Ride Eng clamps and your suspension setup & you’ll have yourself a solid bike!

My only complaint with the yz after owning 3 of them is the clutch basket/hub/pressure plate.  They wear quick.
