No one is ugly after 3 AM.
When in doubt, pull out
We got giving a bunch of cash by a sponsor a week before a national here in South Africa.
We jumped in our van and hit the road. The Day before the national we stopped at a big bike shop to pick up a few consumables.
We knew the owner and he told us he had just received all the sweet Race Tech suspension kits from the USA and he told us it's fucking amazing and we had to have it.
I hauled our race bike outta the van, pulled the suspension off and he installed the Race Tech gold valves and all the goods..
At the national the next day the bike was unriderable. Not enough time to try and get it dailed. My dude crashed so fucking hard we walked outta there with a handful of points.
We got sucked In to the moment and with a wallet full of cash we bought something that we wasn't tried and tested.
We ended the year in 3rd overall and looking back that round was the one that fucked us.
The Shop
Hahahaha....Coyote arm....you gotta chew your arm of the next morning to escape the grunt you find yourself in bed with.
And one day you’ll look back and see that was the round that taught you something invaluable and opened the door for something even more awesome.
Tough one. Thanks for sharing.
It is better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. Apparently they do not teach this to Divorce Court judges.
I once got told by a trail rider that was the teacher for my road license that you MUST, which he really emphasised always use 4 fingers on the front brake and clutch. I said that's insane, I get that you might need to on a classic road bike with drum brakes but not on anything else. He got mad and said that all the fast riders on tracks and off-road used four fingers and that I shouldn't question someone who has professionally ridden bikes for 30 odd years. We argued for a while but I gave up and decided to just shut up and do my test, all whilst he kept shouting use 4 fingers. Imagine trying that on a whooped out sand track, or trying to do a pivot turn with a 4 finger clutch pull
"Be careful", before the red light comes on.
"If you put Vaseline on yer bar that grip will slide on real easy".
Let me rephrase that into good advice for pulling the hole shot: "keep it pinned for a second when everyone else let's off".
I got told this as well at a beginner safety course, with the added bonus of admonishing me to quit covering the brake and clutch levers frequently. I pushed back a little, but this guy was convinced that was the most unsafe thing i could possibly do. Since i was there with my nephew, who was a new rider, i decided to just go with the flow. Afterwards i told my nephew that was terrible advice, and ignore it.
I still chuckle about that one.
There was a time where only using your front brake was encouraged, rather than both… bad advice
Because they put the rear one on the bike to see if you learned not to use it - makes sense.
So many guys became reliant on only using the front brake during that time and never got out of it… such a silly trend. Even your car uses both 🤣
Teaches roll speed into corners.
Not looking to fight.
No need to fight hahaha for me, coming in with more speed and doing your braking early teaches roll speed. Front only just extends your braking zone, which is less efficient. Listen to everyone’s rear chatter at a national. Perfect balance is around 60/40 in Moto IMO
Pit Row
agree - never try anything new on race day - not even gloves
