KTM SX 380 1999/2006

Edited Date/Time 6/6/2017 11:54pm
My dad bought this badass bike:
1999 KTM SX 380, converted to a 2006 with the new subframe and bodywork.
Complete SXS suspension
FMF Gnarly/Powercore2 exhaust
2009 SXF triple clamps
Engine and frame had about 20h on them from new, then it was completely rebuilt. It's basically a new bike.
That thing is scary, but so much fun!

I had a "99SX that I was taking the forks off of and was going to transplant the motor and forks on a '07 or newer chassis. Unfortunatly my garage burned down and lost everything with it. I plan on doing another one some day. I have a buddy who has a complete motor that is disassembled if you need anything.

Be interested in selling that? That cylinder fits up to 1997?

FYI I know a guy near my old home in Michigan that has a legit 2001 SXS 380SX with like 25 hours on it.

I had a 2001 380SX. A really cool bike but poor quality. Nice engine, more like a 250 on steroids than a 500. It was rather allround and you could rev it out or shortshift it.

sorry not selling it,
you can modify most cylinders so they will fit, really old trick in racing

an example aprilia cylinder for honda http://www.he-ja.nl/2007-RS125-intro.brits.htm

very cool! first time i've seen one of those 380's. Over on another forum i frequent, there have been talks of Eric Gorr working on a 400cc cylinder kit for the 02-07 honda CR250's. 300-400cc 2 strokes sound like blast to ride, hope I get to try one someday!

Used to race one of these back in 1999. The engine is pretty much the perfect engine In my opinion. Not quite as fast as a 500 but can be ridden like a 500 just lots of usable controllable power. I am surprised KTM don't still make it they would sell a shit load I think

I totally agree, it has so much useable power, plus a lot more. Rode it on an MX track a few times and once at an cross country race, and was amazed by, how easy it was to ride, after hearing all those stories about what a monster that bike was.
Building this engine into a 2011 SX frame like some dude in Canada did last year would be the perfect 2t race bike.

Damn! Those bikes are pure KTM porn.

The 05-06-07 still is my favorite offroad KTM, rather the late 06-07 since they added the black forks.

I had an 01 380SX. It had the best 2-stroke engine I've ever ridden with and one of the worst chassis.

Haha that is awesome, I had an 01 too and feel the exact same way. The motor was bad ass, that bike ran Glamis for a couple years, and never left me stranded. Smoked a couple 450s up the big hills too... HOWEVER, WORST CHASSIS EVER! I could never get the suspension dialed, front end was always loose too. Still had a blast on the bike though. Great dune bike.

My first bike was a 00 250sx took me a season to get it to turn properly... Then i rode my mates 450 and was sold to the torque, so sold the 00 and got a 03 450. Took me another season to get the thing turn properly again and when it was finally the way i wanted it i sold it again for a smoker. Grinning

The 03-04 250 smoker engine in a 05-06-07 chassis is the perfect combo imo. seeing i got a 04 engine in parts i might look for a next gen frame...

Its funny ktm haven't released a 350/80sx 2t, not much to do, up the 250sx bore and stroke, use the 350/450 chassis. have all their mapping and power valve springs to allow engine cutomization, maybe their waiting till i t can be di/efi

If they produced one I would be first in the que. with that engine and the way KTM handle now it would be the bike to have I'm sure of it. I'm not a big 2 stroke fan by any means and love my 450s, but I think that would be the 2 stroke to compete with the 4T. Light nimble with more usable power than you ever need.

Don't think there is a class for it now is there, could it be raced against the 450 in competition or does it have to large a displacement ??

A lot of vet class guys said the 200SX was THE vet bike.. Can`t imagine those same people who thought a 250 was too much would rather have a 380?

I'm not a vet but would gladly chop my 450 in for one. It's the only 2stroke I would want.

you guys are ignorant at best. the KTM 380 kills the 450 class. the 450 class is the new version of what was the 250 class. The 250 class was based on 2 stroke engine displacement. Remember the yz426? built to compete with the 250cc smokers and still didn't measure up? I have yet to run into ANY 450 that could take me on my 380 in any kind of completion. And I have yet to run into a CR500 that could outperform in the woods or an endure set. Big Bore Pingers For Life!!!!! The Europeans still ride 2 strokes in competitions, and do you want to know why......? Because the overall efficiency of 2 vs 4 stroke is not debatable. 2 strokes will never be outperformed ny a four stroke until the displacement doubles at least. What the hell is wrong with you people?

I had the 2000, motor magic, but suspension was horrible. A bit too much hard-hitting on hardpack, flywheel weight away from perfect there. I think a 325cc would be just fine now, with fi.

I am 60 and race my 380/2013 250sx chassis in mx. The bike is so good, motor is awesome , chassis is very good handling when you dial the suspension and light feeling too. Most fun 2stroke for me.

I think that KTM is really missing out on a very sizeable niche market. Personally, I would like to see them produce a 450SX. Wouldn't be for everyone, but I bet that dune riders would love it. Could certainly produce a smaller version like a 350 or so with just a cylinder and piston change down from the 450.

A modern bored/stroked power-valved 350-400cc 2-stroke would be unbelievable. It's time.
