My buddy just got the call about our tickets for the gp at zmax. They called and said the track has moved to the dirt track beside the drag strip and since we already bought tickets we get to pic what we want at the dirt track. Here is the track map and if this has already been talked about sorry!

Man, it just lost a ton of "cool factor."
that's a short track by American standards correct? Aren't most track here in the 1.25 -1.5 mile length? 35ft wide is good though. I bet that first year they had the Muddy Creek race there some sections that did good to be 10ft wide.

Will now feel like a fairgrounds race as the setting is totally changed.

Big change. Would be cool if they let the fans on the floor level.

It was a terrible idea before and its worse now. There is no shortage of good MX tracks to have this at. Attendance is going to look like Qatar and then they will tell us we cant have GPs in America because nobody shows up.

I live in Charlotte.. Pretty mind blown that they've switched it to the dirt track..

Here's the dirt track, with the drag strip in the back ground and the Charlotte Motor Speedway NASCAR track at the bottom. For perspective, the NASCAR track is a 1.5mi loop..

I still plan on attending, but yea.. major blow to this race. To go from hosting the race at "the only pro 4 lane drag strip in the world" to just another dirt track is.. well.. disappointing.

I wonder if the switch could be due to lack of ticket sales thus far??

I will withhold judgment until track is built........

BUT I don't have high hopes

After further consideration... this isn't just disappointing; it's a fucking joke.

Here's something ironic.. They used to have supercross races inside the NASCAR track. They are now having a GP race inside the dirt track. Wow.. Just.. wow..

Why couldn't they build a course on the speedway infield in front of the start\finish grandstands.... like it's done at Daytona?
The original concept which used the dragstrip was much better though. Sad

I'm surprised by this. Weren't they selling suite ticket packages?? They don't have suites at the dirt track.. I just don't see how this is true.

This is like a local fairground race now. Like ole Metrolina Speedway days in 99-2000 in the JMX series here in the Carolinas.

Just looked on the site and yep sure enough it has switched. My money will be going down to Darlington to watch Nascar that weekend for sure now. This GP will turn out to be an embarrassment to the sport.

Embarrassment especially after watching MotoGP at COTA yesterday...............I'm sure it's all about the money.......already have a dirt base instead of making one............could have been epic...........but on the bright side it will now most likely be like most of the other shit MXGP tracks Tongue Tongue

As a fan of the Sport I don't see how anyone would buy tickets more than a week or so in advance.

GP's and MXoN's have a history of being canceled or changed completely.

Exactly. I used to race JMX too, and this isn't looking much different than the Shelby track! Hell, Parker Valley would be an upgrade from this (if it still existed. RIP)

It holds 14,000...

The Dirt Track at Charlotte is a 0.4 miles (0.64 km) clay oval located across Highway 29 from the quad-oval speedway. The stadium-style facility, built in 2000, has nearly 14,000 seats and plays host to Dirt Late Models, Modifieds, Sprint Cars, Monster Trucks and the prestigious World of Outlaws World Finals.

The reason for the race is that Charlotte Motor Speedway wanted a MX event. I think it was Weigandt that said the speedway had talked with Feld and MX Sports and could not make anything happen and in the end they struck a deal with Youthstream.

There are plenty of good tracks but the speedway wanted it on their turf.

They need to take out that horseshoe and send them full tilt thru turns 1 and 2. Also leave the blue groove. 1/2 mile dirttrack is really short to build an mx track inside.

The good news is that this will allow for a larger track....flat but larger. The quality of the track will depend on the dirt used so hopefully it will be a sand/clay mix and not just the hard red clay that is around there.

The lady that he talked to said they have plans to make bigger jumps because they will have more room. I know it's still early but wondered if ticket sales so far have scared them away from using the drag strip? I live close by and have been to the dirt track a few times and I think spectating will be just as good as the drag strip

Yup, that sounds like Bruton Smith alright (owner of Charlotte Motor Speedway, and many others). The city of Concord initially voted to not allow him to build the 4 wide drag strip; to which he said "Fine, I'll just move the NASCAR race to another track and the speedway can sit empty!" Not only did the city of Concord end up approving the build, they renamed Speedway Blvd. to Bruton Smith Blvd. Dude has pull.

My worry is there will not be enough seats.
