Racing at a sand track in two weeks. What tire do you guys recommend? Should I use the mx31 or the mx11? Which tire is more important to have a "sand tire", the front or rear? I am on a budget and need to balance my meth consumption with how much I spend on tires so I may only be able to afford one tire.

My bike has a 120, D756 on the rear right now and some odd-ball dunlop front "intermediate" tire that I think sucks but it is okay (whatever tires come stock on a YZ450 is what I have on there now).

I have never raced on a full-on sand track so I have no clue wtf I am doing. LOL! About all I know is that road racing slicks with about 30 psi should work pretty dang good if all else fails. ;p

Just make sure you get one with the shortest knobs that are spaced close together. This will let you float on top of the sand.Evil

Pirelli MT32. Not a full sand tire but will work better than everything but a full sand tire. The mx11 you will only be able to use at the sand track. If you want to go that route Pirelli has a similar tire but I've never tried that one.

I use MX31's on both ends for our D-23 sand track which is deep pure sand, way more so than southwick. They work great there and also work at our other loose loamy tracks but are crap on anything that is even close to hard pack. I switch to MX51's for those tracks.
Bottom line is that the MX31 is a great choice that works in more conditions than just sand which is better than a full sand tire that you may only use once a year at a sand track and is worthless in anything other than sand or pure mud. If price and only occasional use is not a factor then you can buy a pure sand tire and many MFG's make one including Dunlop if you prefer that brand.

A set of those were on my bike today at Dyracuse. It's like cheating since most guys show up there with bald hard pack tires on practice days.

I've never used them. I bought a brand new set last year just for Dyracuse. Anschutz showed up late Saturday afternoon and I was going to have them mount them for me, and they told me they'd do it right away in the morning. Wake up, took my wheels and tires over to their rig, and they tell they're packing up and heading out because of the weather.

Needless to say, the tires are still brand new, and are just collecting dust in the shop.

How was Dyracuse anyways? Rough or like glass?

Edit: I hate changing tires.

Every time I walk into the shop I get a face full of sand. They're pretty wicked, even when not installed.

It was med/rough. They did not drag it. Downhill/right turn had a deep outside berm that was mind blowing fun every lap. I am so over hard pack clay tracks. Dyracuse is my favorite place to moto down with my kids. Been going there for 10 years. I hear they have trails and a bogus clay sx track. I never rode them. Never will. Best $10 of fun in the world.

These tyres will work excellently for you in the sand and also any other intermediate/loam tracks which would make them better value, in my opinion, than a sand only tyre as pictured above. The sand only tyres are exactly that - sand only - and need to be removed if riding other tracks or they will disappear quickly. The MT32 is much more versatile and better value for money. And still excellent in the sand. Honestly only Expert or Pro riders would 'greatly' benefit from the sand only tyres.

I used some of these and they worked out pretty good here in the Dutch sand.

There's a guy that tests and develops tires at Dunlop: He runs a 71...EVERYWHERE? Is there a msg here?

Yesterday, while testing for the Extremity Games we had MX51s and 31s on bikes (rears) at "E-Street" in Marysville:

31's make more visible roost and DO hook up better in TRUE Sand...yet...the 51s seem to be a bit better in the Clay parts of the track and track better on jump faces/over the harder surfaces.

All bikes had 51 fronts...

If you have a REAL "SAND" track...you can't go wrong with 31s frt and rr...

Otherwise: We actually use 71 frts and 51/71 rears for all our "Multi-use" riding...we switched to 51's for the "Sandier" conditions of Marysville and will proll'y run 51's in the Morning at Hangtown (Friday's "Cross-Over" race) and switch to 71s later in the day. At Baja Acres/The Extremity Games we are planning on 51 frts and 31/51 rrs.

Good luck.
