Hey everyone. I'm new to the motorcycle scene. Just bought my first dirt bike and wanted some better opinions on the buy. It's a 1979 Yamaha MX100. Completely original, all the way to the tires. It's in perfect shape and only minor rust. What do you all think the value of the bike would be? Is it a "collectors" item that I should hold on to or is it just something to use up and have fun on?

Sweet find! I wouldn't ride it but I'd fix it up. Too rare to ride but I don't know what value it has. I wanted one when I was a kid!

I would ride it. That bike probably has little collectible value but the value of the fun factor could be off the charts. Just keep it nice and the dollar value will always be there. Looks a whole lot like the 74-75 models with a little different tank and exhaust. Is there any vintage racing where you are at? Marty Tripes 100cc class?

I had a brand new 1980 model when I was a kid that looked just like that! I tricked mine out with some Sunline DeHandler levers like Bob Hannah used and several stickers. Brings back a lot of memories!

Awesome! In keeping with it as valuable as I can would anyone suggest what I could do to "fix it up"? Any suggestions on upgrades? / cool tweeks to do? I'm not sure about the vintage racing, but you definitely have me interested in looking.

Would putting new "modern" item tires de-value the originality of the bike, or is that considered just a regular maintenance thing?

I had two of those back in the 90's. Got a package deal for $400. High speed coil took a dump on one of them. Easy fix.
Had an old NOS Torque pipe I put on one of them. Woke it up a bit.

If you make any changes / upgrades, just be sure to keep the original parts, and store them properly. You can then return it back to original when the time comes.

The late model RT 100 is nearly the same bike, except for updated cosmetics.

We rode the dog crap out of ours.

The bike looks mint. Sand all the rust off and reprint original and have fun. Tires won't hurt and you can probably find some original looking stuff.

Very cool find. I had the 1977 DT100D. The DT was the "enduro" model and had all the lights and instruments. Man I killed that thing. Busted all the lights off quickly. Should have got the YZ80 that year, but wanted to have the lights and stuff at that point in time (age 13). A friend's cousing had the 1979 "MX" version. Good luck.
