Hey guys I am trying to get my shop business going and wondered about adding a crank rebuilding service to my shop right now I bore and resleeve cylinders but I dont have the equipment to correctly rebuild cranks , they make some nice tools now to do the cranks right but wondered if I could get enough business to make it worth while ? Any thoughts ? Thanks

You should easily be able to recover the costs of the equipment needed to do the job right.

Rebuilding and truing cranks is easy work (once you master it) and a good money maker!

Once people know you can do this and are good, you will get new customers left and right. I know a lot riders who are pretty decent mechanics, but they usually won't do a crank for lack of knowledge and/or equipment.

I have been rebuilding cranks for most of my life but always did it without the correct tools , to sell the service to the public I want them spot on ! The equipment is not cheap here is what I have in mind , #1 I want the crank fixture from K&L supply it is an awesome piece and it is $800 bucks !
#2 I want a professional truing stand they make a combo that will tru sppked wheels and has a bearing type leg to tru cranks and you can run them to absolute ZERO with a dial indicator ,,,its $400 bucks ,,,,

As far as knowing how to do stuff I can , I am a professional mechanic I was a bike mechanic at shops most of my life ,

Thanks for any and all replies

What is a fair price to do a crank ? Lets say ? A 1990 cr250 honda ? To install a hotrod kit and tru it ? What would the average price be for that service ?

Yes the tin can cranks are not a problem because the crank fixture as pictured above does the alignment off the part of the crank where the bearing runs it dont hurt the tin part ,,,

Just consider it another service to get you more business. I would charge your hourly shop rate plus parts like most mechanics do.

$75 to $100 per rebuild is not uncommon.

Ok guys I have placed an order for one of the krg crank fixture assemblies pictured above said 2 to 3 weeks they have to build me one of them , so I guess I have 3 shop services now ,
#1 cylinder boring
#2 cylinder sleeving
#3 crank rebuilding
It will take me a long time to make my money back but I look at it as an investment ,
Thanks for all the replies , anybody from this site need anything I can do text or message me on here 276 312 3812
