Theres a lot of complaining about the tracks lately. Theyre all the same, start dependent, dangerous…etc. What about if 1 race a year they added a sand track. It would slow them down so its less dangerous and it would be a big change up. They did it for the smx cup in europe and it was pretty awesome seeing something different. Theres tons of passing here and its overall a cool race. They also used multiple mx style jumps that are not used in supercross that shows there are other options out there. Thoughts?
Here ya go. I wore out a vcr tape back in the day watching this over and over.
I'm sitting here trying to figure out why I HAVE NO MEMORY of this race. Not even a hint of remembering it. A bunch of big names in it.
Arenacross accidentally did that in Daytona this year
all out sand sx track would be dope or even they can go back & start doing a sand section like they did tht 1 yr , forgot the city they were in but I remember Justin hill was killing marv & Eli in tht section on his 450 debut
The Shop
I want to race this track today! It would be fun for amateurs, probably lame for pro's with today's bikes.
How do I have zero recollection of this race?
I recall this track not being very well-received by vital members, but I always thought it was badass. Don't think i'd care for a 17 round series of it, but 1 round to mix things up, im fully on board
Wow! How have I never heard of this? I figured that one off smx race was the only time its been done, had no idea they already did it in the ama. Thats badass. Thanks for sharing this. Definitely a cool concept.
-also your username checks out haha
Bradshaw...ON A 125!...and JMB were the only ones to do this on/off section and it was way faster. Watch for it.
Lol, I did too, I was a huge Bradshaw fan and that race popped into my head as soon as I read an all sand track.
I'm pretty pleased with my self that I holeshot all the other 45+ year olds who remember that race.
I’ve been banging on about this all year. Would be such a spectacle for them to try and recreate this.
Sand track?
How are you going to draw the selfie-generation/grow-the-sport fans?
We demand our aerial gymnastics and thrills and spills dammit!!!
(I'm all in BTW with this idea.... because SX is pretty much dead to me at this point)
I think you would have a harder time getting the OEMs on board than the fans. Pingree always talks about how crazy it was to have the gatorback national during the supercross series and how the OEMs had it changed. I'd see a sand race that requires a completely different set up would receive the same feelings
This is exactly why the cookie-cutter problem exists. Rinse, load up the team trailers, next city, repeat.

It’s been done. My 1st SX was a full on sand track and it was awesome…Oakland, 1979. Someone brought a paddle tire.
Didn't Tampa have a sand race one year? Maybe I'm thinking of the Miami race but in my mind I remember the sand being deeper and more of a golden color. I would love to see a modern sand SX.
We have no problem having southwick as a change up in the lineup, maybe it could be the same for sx. Maybe they could do it for the smx playoffs to try it out for the first time. As a masshole I vote we make gillette the sand race haha. It only comes around every other year anyways
Pit Row
I am 100% for adding one sand track to breakup the series. Maybe one of the SMX rounds would be ideal, actually.
I think youre thinking of 2018 Tampa, when Justin Hill lead a good portion of the race on his debut for JGR 450.
Wasnt a sand race, but had a rather gnarly sand section
No the race I may or may not have made up in my mind was in the early 90's
The small sand sections are pointless. But make the sand section a full length lane + corner and it will be much better. Like in 2018 Tampa, long section with a jump and rollers. But add that corner at the end and its way better.
Man, those tracks looks more like a superenduro track that they run now a days. Speeds are low, jumps short and steep.
Weinert brought the paddle tire. Sand wouldn't work with 50 second lap times and todays horsepower and torque over 20 minutes plus laps.
Definitely agree that at the very least they should bring back an entire sand section here and there.
I like the idea
