A question: I am thinking to get me a XL500S, is it worth it?

Not sure I would expect a reply from him. This thread is almost 4 years old and the member you quoted hasn't posted in almost that long.

My general reply to your question would be: you're talking about a 40-50 YO bike for which they longer make parts. You have to decide what your intent is for it and if it's worth it to you.

Hope it helps.

I had one and wished I had another. I'm going to have to find one to restore.

I would guess around $750 MSRP in 1972.  Which would be equivalent to about $5,600 today.

Obviously far from what we have now, but in many ways one of the first of a breed.

A bike you could comfortably ride to work Mon-Fri, and go trail riding on the weekend. In a time when far fewer people could afford numerous bikes.

I had an ‘81 version, complete with 23” front wheel. It was my economical transport to work every day as an apprentice. I could wheelstand that thing for ever. (Even had a fine to prove it!)

I bent the forks doing “No hander landings” (A “thing” in the day.)

Simpler bikes. Simpler times. Great times.

I really liked the look of those XL's.  I've still got an old MT250 that I rode every mountain fire road near Travis AFB back in the day.Wink

Those were Elsinores too. I was still on my XR75 then but I remember them being fast.

No the 500,s r piles. I had one a funny story about it I bought it . Rode it a little then parked it in a car port. Went on a date then we get back to my place at night. I tell my girlfriend check out what you be riding on tomorrow. I shine thd head lts of the car in. And there’s no bike. I didn’t panic I thought my room mate was pulling a prank. But no it was stolen. A few months later the police called & said come down & get your bike. The police sting was called operation cat.  A large group stole anything you could think of. A neighbor of mine called the group the police told me.  He was under 18 so I was told don’t beat him. I knocked on his door & grabbed him & threw him in a bush. And said don’t ever come ovr again and stay off my property.  Etc.  get a xr650 L if you want a cool enduro. The 24 is the same as a 1990 or whatever yr was the 1st 600.

Is a XR 600R woth it, its a 1996 has driven 10 000 miles and it has a knock (owner thinks its the intake valve(s)) hes asking 1900, is that a good deal. it comes with spare parts: a spare tank, spare shocks, 2 cylinder heads, bottom motor end parts (clutch housing, chains, gears, levers, etc), a spare seat, exhaust pipes, muffler, carburator and plastics. Do you think its worth it?

My 1st motorcycle was a 1975 MT125 and it was an end of the year deal at $600 from Honda City in Glen Burnie MD.

Yeah, I rode a 76 yz125 in 1976.  I think the only thing Honda updated in 76 was the paint.    I did have a 1974 MR175.  Perfect learning bike for a 14 year old!

My buddy restored his 350. He races Vintage in the 60 plus expert class, still has the front and rear lights on.

He often holeshots, or worse case is always top 3 off the start. Usually finishes top 3-5.

Fun to watch him pass all the high end built Euro bikes. He likes being the underdog Cool
