Agreed, that’s why I stated multiple times I’m not assuming it’s an illegal substance. But what is the legal substance they are using? I don’t think it’s smelling salts. And why wait till you are behind the gate?

Yeah OK. You are implying that he is snorting (which by the way means inhaling some solid substance through the nose) something potentially illegal. Others have suggested much more reasonable and far more likely alternatives, such as smelling salts, but you dismiss those and stand by your speculative assertion.
Is there even any PED testing taking place anymore? I just have to laugh at people who think that motocross is "clean". There are guys "juicing" to be #1 on Strava for god's sake. You don't think given the millions of $$$ these riders are earning for winning isn't going to lead to looking for any "advantage" you can get. Athletes seeking performance improvements sometimes use smelling salts for their stimulating effect. Smelling salts trigger a sharp inhalation reflex, bringing in more air and oxygen. This may result in improved alertness. Guys at my gym do this in competition. Always thought it was some drug until I asked. Got laughed out of the gym.

On my college hockey team we use to use Hall's Menthol Lyptus lozenges and they worked great.

There seems to be several camps in this thread:
1) Those who want to speculate some sinister motive and PED usage.
2) Those who want to placate, deny, and explain.
3) Those that are offended this topic was brought up to begin with.
But not many have shared any understanding of what's happening, and to what purpose. For me, I think its a fair and reasonable question to ask based on what's shown on the public broadcast of the event.
You do realize these guys are drug tested, right? For Christ sake. Totally normal if a rider uses smelling salts or a nasal inhaler to help open the sinuses for better breathing. Nothing illegal or wrong. I remember some Tour de France rider talking about forcing himself to yawn so he'd get more oxygen in the lungs. If you're so worried about them being seen doing it on TV I would argue the Monster/Red Bull/ Rockstar drinks they pretend to slam (which are typically filled with water) are far more dangerous to health than any smelling salts or nasal inhaler.

I saw Deegs and Kitchen given an inhalant, in the pits, right before they headed to the line at Millville last year.
They reacted as if it was really harsh, it made their eyes water, they rubbed their noses and shook their heads.
I too wondered what in the heck that might be.... I also, and still do, assume it is indeed legal. Just curious as I hadn't seen it before.
That's the common reaction to smelling salts, which is why I don't think that's what Jett is administering on the start line. When I was younger I lost a bet and smelling salts was the payoff, that shit is harsh.
The guy in this thread that would know more than most referenced essential oils. I have no idea what they are supposed to do.
