AMA # 533, and 967. Nationals in the mid 70's, early 80's. Fast enough to qualify for the show, fodder for the fast guys. T- Bond, we used to hang out with Calvin Kalicki, you might remember him. Rode the Nationals, never paid for anything, biggest swoop artist out there. Pat Moroney, dined and dashed us at a choke and puke, just got up and left us to pay. We all bailed! Now is Moroney Harley Davidson. He used to buy up old Harleys while he travled the Nationals, stuff them in his van, and take them back to New York. Rode with Mike Mcandrews in Nor-cal, he started Works Connection in the East, I think. Was Jeff wards mechanic for a while. Sold the company, and ended up with Rockshox, then moved on.

T-Bond, I've got all my old stuff, old pro cards, pictures. I have original Fox orange and yellow jackets from the 70's. I have event programs from Hangtown Nationals 1975. Muddy as hell! I have Fox pants that they cut off of me when I broke my femur. Ya kind of sick! Let me know what we can do. I don't want to loose the stuff. Programs from the 1975 Superbowl of MotoCross.

Look at the one example on the site. All you have to do is email me some photos and a bio and I will take care of the rest. You don't have to mail me anything. Also include your email address incase I have any questions. Same with you Bobby. I think its about time us privateers got some recognition.

[quote="Mini Elsinore":51386]Whatever happened to Donnie Cantaloupi?[/quote:51386]

Donnie got in some trouble & spent some time in prison, he's cleaned up his act & is working for a body shop as the manager.

Spent some time with him when he came to EVO-Sports pro/am at Rio Bravo in 04' he was having a ball until he broke his wrist in the frist trun.

Thanks for the update. Donnie was one fast dude with alot of style. Glad to hear he is on the right track; bummer about the wrist.[/quote:ac199]

Ya that was a great 2 day event, I got to see a lot of the guy's from the old day's.

It's was fun talking with Mike Bell who I went to high school with. Gary Jones, Marty Smith & Bryan Myerscough, Kent Howerton were also there.

Check this out for a full report

My Yellow Yamahauler Chevy van was parked right under one of those arches that day in 1975 at the Coliseum, right over your right shoulder. Can't see it though in that photo.

That was fun riding the Superbowl. Had to qualify for the main moto. I had a down pipe on my Yamaha, got knocked out of the cylinder, no power for a couple of laps. Lucky to qualify. Thank you again for the recognition.

Dan,
You and I must have competed against each other at some point in So. Cal. We both had the same bikes. Although everybody had those things back then....they wailed.

You are right that was the best bike back then. I took those ugly square fenders off the day I got it from Saddleback Suzuki in El Toro. When I see them now with the square fenders, they look pretty good. Must be old age.

T-Bond they did wail. Some of the local so-cal boys had some wicked fast 125's. I ran mostly stock motors in nor-cal. Mike Bells Long Beach Honda was a beast. Warrn Reids 125 Honda was just sick. DG built some screamers.

I did and gained some top end. You could over rev it going into the corners. I remember that really helped lower my lap times.

Mostly the Suzukis I rode were fairly stock in the engine dept. Wiesco head, bigger carb and modded CDI unit. The pipe was usually toast by the time it was run in so it was replaced too. The best advantage I had was decent suspension.

Bobby M. - "shoulda won the last race....bummer"
======================================================

Jeez Bobby, 2nd behind Danny " Magoo" Chandler in the 2nd moto is nothing to be bummed about. Quite a few legendary riders finished behind you that moto!

What was the issue that cost you the the win that day?
3/18/2006 8:23am
dnf 1st moto due to a shock failure due to me being a stupid ass.

actually finished 36 or something...after i went back out with a new shock...missed a lap or two.

had a crappy gate pick and started near last..passed everybody but danny. in all fairness i literally owned that track for a while...even shultz had nothing on me at sears point i think

Mechanical DNF cost you the overall……..your right bummer.

DNF's - the younger guys do not know what it is to have to ride within the limits of the bikes or risk breaking them.

Must have been an "E ticket ride" racing against Magoo and Shultz.........both blazing fast and neither known for staying on the bike. :shock:

Hey old guys.... I was around back then... won the first Golden State series ( the one everyone got ripped off) 250 int class, moved to CMC pro afterwards. Used to be fast for a couple of laps, then work my way back to mid-pack. Spent a lot of time at Escape Country and Saddleback.
Raced at 395/ Sunrise Valley Cycle Park as well. Mostly on Suzuki's, but did some Maico and Bultaco time too.
