Any one have a pair of these on their bike? Looking to see how much fork oil they take on 1981 forks Think that the 1980 ones ar
e a shorter length so they might take less oil -thanks
What diameter are the forks? I would think 38mm leading axle but they could be 35mm (straight or leading axle) or early 40mm. A picture of the lowers would be helpful. I have some Can-Am and SWM manuals that should cover all variations of the forks.

i rebuilt a set a few years ago (38mm) for my 81 KTM 250…but I can’t remember how much oil I put in them. I’ll see if I can look it up.
Yes they are 38mm ones.As for a photo i am not clever enough to take one and post it!
That would be great if you could find that out
The Shop
390 mL of 5 wt fork oil was used on the 1981 Can-Am MX 250 and 400. I hope this helps!

Much appreciated that. When i turned the forks upside down to drain i got about 350 ml out of each leg . Ended up pulling the lowers off and was surprized that there was still about 50ml of oil at a guess still in them . Have only ridden the bike once with them on it going very slow around a farmers field and thought they seemed very soft so was going to put 420ml but will now go with 400ml and see what happens. Thanks again
From Marzo manual:
Keep an eye out on the area around those zokes axle mounts. I've seen them develop small hairline cracks on late 70's and early 80s can-ams and KTMs equipped with these forks. My 81 KTM 250 GS a hairline crack at the axle mounting area, and my 79 KTM 400 GS (see photo) did too. Had a hard time finding someone to repair them. Luckily, I was able to find a good set of used replacements for both bikes.
This is the desease of these forks, especially when screw too tight.
I added an aluminum plate to avoid tightening these screws too hard
