WP shock service question

Why is a vacuum pump required to bleed a WP shock? I've rebuild many kyb and showa shocks and I'm confident that I do a good job of bleeding all air out. I've also rebuilt quit a few fox and walker evans shocks from side x sides with floating pistons and they also just get bled by hand. I have steered away from the WP shocks because I've been led to believe I need a expensive vacuum bleeder. Someone fill me in.

Probably don’t need one but I always wind up shooting oil all over the place whenever I service a shock.

Can buy a cheap bleeder from heliosure if you want to go that way.

Thanks for that. Looks like it's the kit minus the vacuum pump itself? I think a harbor freight or vevor pump would work ok. The race tech kits are almost $2000 and Lainer is more than that.

Yup, just need a vac pump. His kit comes with the fitting for standard WP shocks, but shockbleeder.com also sells just the fittings and you can use those with the heliosure unit.

I have only used it once so far but seems to have worked well.

So you have this setup? Do you have a link or info on what pump you have?

Yes, I’m using a Mastercool 3cfm single stage pump, anything like that will work, I did have to get an adaptor to connect the vac pump to the bleeder. You would also need compressed air to fill, then a nitrogen setup to gas up the shocks.

I actually run a atv, dirtbike,  sxs repair shop for 20 years. I don't claim at all to be a "suspension shop" but like I said I do service most other shocks and forks. I'm just not real familiar with the WP stuff and I am always careful to not oversell myself if I'm not confident that I can do a good job on something. At almost 54 years old I always say this old dog is done learning new tricks, but I do enjoy servicing suspension so here I am trying to learn new tricks lol

Very cool.

If suspension work is not your main business, I’m sure you could get by using a more “hobby grade” bleeder like this and not the $$$$ versions.

Im with you, I’m here to learn and share what I can!

You don't need a pump to bleed you can bleed by hand

WP linkage shocks get bled just like any Japanese shock.  It's the PDS shocks that have 2 pistons and are in pain to get a good bleed on without a machine.

I bleed my WP linkage shocks like normal and then finish it off with the bleed cup.  Works great.
