Not better than the alternative, IMO.  The alternative the AMA should have pursued would have been to exclude dirt bikes from emissions standards, like every other state in the nation.  Totally eliminate the requirement for permitting in the first instance.

Re it being worse than the red sticker program - here's a direct quote from the referenced article:  "The AMA thanks its California members, especially in District 36, for their advocacy regarding this important issue. Their efforts over the past three years played a key role in the passage of this legislation."

Glad to know my AMA membership fees helped with this.  /s

The alternative was nothing.  What you want would never happen.  We're a niche minority that will consistently get kicked to the curb unless people abandon this sort of wishful magical thinking and get involved to claw back what is possible.  The 70s level of access and zero regulation are not coming back.

You and I don't have to like that reality, but if you check out and don't support the organizations that work for you the sport will die much sooner.  Cold facts there.

Maybe things would be better if folks stood up and fought for what they believed in, as opposed to rolling over and accepting the little scraps thrown their way.  The days of total access and zero regulation can return - it all starts with the ballot box and supporting organizations who are willing to fight the fight.   The AMA should be that org, but unfortunately they don't have it in them.  And don't even get me started about the NRA.  Lol.

Bullshit denial there.  That's the kind of unrealistic fantasy that will end this passion sooner than if people fight smart.

We are the easiest chip to throw at other interest groups, 99% of which have more influence, largely because too many like the lot here with the "no one's doing anything/I won't support anyone/ but I can't accept less than everything" attitude are disorganized loons to the public.   A group of moms can get books banned from. schools and this bunch can't get out its own way.  What self defeating waste.  Good luck with that.

Tell me what your political action plan, your activity, and $$$ are to make what you want happen, and why it will succeed, then you'll be credible.

Otherwise you're just a chickenshit lip flapper riding on others' efforts while shitting on them, crying in your own piss.  Sorry not sorry you're stripped to show up your pathetic excuses.

I'm going to send 17 dollars to the AMA and save the sport.

Coming from the mtb trail building world, the best break down I've heard about the process is "It takes 5 years for approval, 3 months to build, and 3 minutes to ride."

Be in it for the long haul. It's not about showing up to one public comment period; it's a matter of years of showing up to every City Council, Chamber of Commerce, high school career day, public lands clean up, and downtown shindig that you can get yourself invited to, and being a polite presence for your cause. And it's not just you, it's a matter of recruiting a critical mass of dozen or so more people to have the same the same degree of positive engagement with their community for your cause.

Bitching about the process is about as productive about complaining about basektball having rules that require you to dribble the ball from one end of the court to the other, and proclaiming how obviously more effective it would be to kick your opponents in the balls and stack their heaving bodies under the basket to score all the points. Sure it might work for one play, but it will get you banned & never invited back.
