When you watch old races from the early nineties, you see that they have quite a few obstacles which slow them down dramatically. I do not understand why they make the tracks even more fluid in the 4 stroke age? Just give them some obstacles they cannot jump or really slow them down dramatically. They are fun/neat bikes and ridden within their design parameters are incredible machines. My first bike was a 1989 XR250, thought it was dorky and stupid, my dad bought it for me in ~1992ish and it was barely ridden. I really wanted a RMX250 though. But it worked great, never gave me problems, but never forget how much fun I had on that exploring. Jumping on my 2000 XR400 gives me the same vibes and just feels like home. Clean XR's are out there, reasonably priced too.

When I used to work for a KTM dealer, 300 models out sold 250s at a 5 to 1 ratio. Only reason we even had 250s was because it was a requirement with your allotment. The only thing more niche in the dirt bike market than motocross is trials. I wish I could ride fast enough to qualify for a 450 main. The guy who finishes last is an excellent, and fast racer - just not an “Alien” like the guys at the front. Remember, guys that have won: sometimes finish 10th. I don’t think it’s lack of talent, or the 250 class, that is the issue.
