Gavin Faith has been the fill-in rider of the year, bouncing between GEICO Honda, his own privateer effort, and now the Toyota/JGRMX/Yamaha team, as well as brands, and classes.
In Seattle, he struggled with the change, but bad weather prior to the race had prevented him with getting anything but a lone day of testing. The quiet Iowan should be better-prepared this weekend, as we head into the penultimate round of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season.
Q: New Orleans looked like that was easily one of your best rides of the season, wasn’t it?
A: Yeah. That was good. I finally got a couple good starts to get up front and just feel it out and kind of run with those guys, just kind of feel out the pace. It was really good.
Q: Did you kind of know the opportunity for a replacement ride with Toyota/JGRMX/Yamaha was already happening at that point or not?
A: No, not really, to be honest with you. It all kind of came up after the race. I think doing pretty good in New Orleans helped. It pretty much all this came up after the race, so it’s good.
Q: This year has kind of been a little funny for you, hasn't it? Different bikes and different places…
A: Yeah. I’ve definitely kind of been around, but it’s awesome to have these opportunities like this, to ride these really good bikes. I’m just thankful for the opportunities.
Q: You finish up Supercross here and then what?
A: I’m not sure what I’m doing Outdoors. But I’m pretty sure I’m going to go over to Australia and run their Supercross series again like I did last year. I’m not sure about Outdoors yet. I’m just going to make it through Vegas and then worry about Outdoors after.
Q: What’s it like trying to adapt to different bikes and different teams and all that on short notice?
A: It makes things a little interesting. Actually, I got comfortable on the Yamaha really quick. I only got a day on it before Seattle here. So, it’s a little quick, but I feel good on it.
Q: Is it more like Davi’s setup or is it James’ bike? What’s the deal?
A: Yeah, it’s pretty much the exact same setup that Davi has. He’s a really good tester and they pretty much just went off that. I rode it and it feels really good. So, we’re just going to run it with that.
They set up the suspension for my weight and stuff but it’s pretty much the same settings he has. I put the bars I like on there and stuff. Other than that it’s pretty much what Davi has. It’s really good.
