Vital MX Pit Bits: 2024 Daytona Supercross 2

A deep dive into the garages of Daytona...

It's good to see Bobby Hewitt back in the paddock, and dawning his new colors. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
The Star team went retro again in Daytona! The second Supercross this year they're running this look. Also, it's good to see Brent Duffe, who was back in action for the second weekend. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Chase Sexton's Red Bull KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition was the talk of the pits in Daytona... Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Sexton's bike had a few new parts on it in Daytona. One being a modified production WP shock instead of a works or kit unit. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Triple clamps were fairly new, they had been on the bike for a week or two at this point. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Then the forklugs caught our eyes. They use the smaller production axle, instead of the factory team's larger axle. Not totally unusual, but the shape and machining of the lugs were familiar to something else. After a bit of thinking, we realized these were likely Technical Touch lugs for a KYB conversion kit...with the black anodizing stripped off. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
In comparison to AP's lugs. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Once we got a look at the new top triple clamps, which use rubber mounting instead of solid mounting, we noticed the forks had another unusual part. As the top sub tanks/caps looked like KYB AOS fork cartridges...explaining the lugs. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
In comparison to AP's forks with WP's 6500 cone valve cartridges. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
We'll see where this goes over the following weeks. This was the second round we're aware of that Sexton raced with this fork and shock combo and there's talk that we may see another Austrian factory rider on a similar setup in Alabama. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Here's a peak at what these lugs look like when not stripped. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
These KYB insert kits are fairly popular with multiple aftermarket tuners such as Enzo Racing, Factory Connection, and more utilizing them. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
A look at the latest factory Kawasaki 450 Showa shock body. This unit is quite hard to see on the bike due to the new packaging and placement. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
J-Mart is back! Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Drool...new semi... Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Hopefully we can pull open this door in the coming weeks for a tour. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Triumph's US team has a unique sponsor in Freedom Road Financial. We're seeing a few credit lenders get involved in the sport. With Wells Fargo over at KTM, Synchrony with AEO, and now this. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Fresh pressure washer bay. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Dink Weird teas and waters are in the Triumph pits but not officially listed on the bike. Starting small? This brand is headed up by an ex-higher up from Rockstar Energy. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Alcavi bikes are featured in the Triumph pits, a road bike company is part-owned by Aldon Baker. With a few staff members and a rider on the team having prior relationships with Aldon, it's not a total shocker. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Evan Ferry's machine was parked for the weekend and hopefully will be back on track in the next week or two. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Triumph's factory footpeg brackets with carbon fiber mud guard is trick! Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Hmmm, brake pedal shape and length are different on the factory Triumph bikes. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Little 3D printed cover for the three-pronged adjuster on the KYB shock of the Triumph machine. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Hmmm, different airbox for the Triumph crew? In Supercross, not a shocker. Modified or printed airboxes can be found on almost every factory 250 if you really go hunting. Honda's is heavily different, Pro Circuit makes an airboot they sell, the KTM trio has a second injector and carbon fiber velocity stack that is very different, etc. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
It's so nice to have a new machine in the pits to drool over. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
3D printed mount for a...data logging box? We're not fully sure as we're not super familiar with the Motec electronics system that Triumph is using on their race machines. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Sensors going into a modified oil filter cap. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Typical O2/Lambda sensor. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Upgraded Brembo calipers front and rear on the Triumphs. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Forks flush in Supercross, interesting... The Triumph does turn well but still a bit shocking. We wonder what offset they're using indoors with X-Trig. Also, it would be so nice to get silver X-Trigs in the states... Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Triumph, like many other top teams, trust Works Connection with their holeshot device. Still the most popular unit in the paddock. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
The Triumph race team has replaced the production multiple-switch cluster with a simple kill switch. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Well, that's easy to read. Evan Ferry is on a 139.5mm pull rod. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
While Jalek Swoll is on a 139mm pullrod. Thanks for the transparency Triumph! Michael Lindsay
Place holder
The production bikes have a hollowed out top engine mount but for Supercross the team has a stiffer solid option. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Jalek Swoll holding it down solo for the brand in Daytona. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
The Daytona legend himself. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
See Tomac's muffler? Shorty! See Webb's in the background? Long. The shorty is a recent change for Tomac. Power difference solely or could he even notice the mass and weight placement possibly? Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Yes, the stock YZ450F comes with two engine plates stacked on the front of the bike on each side. As seen here on Tomac and Webb's machines... Michael Lindsay
Place holder
However, J-Coop's setup caught our eye as they tightened up the mounting position to the frame, went to a thicker one-piece aluminum design, and changed the hardware. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Left side stock view, where each mount bolts into the frame. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
While J-Coop's has been drilled all the way through the frame and is a long bolt with nuts. Interesting. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Top caps on Star's works hybrid LSF KYB forks. Compression low and high-speed, along with rebound low-speed are found on the top of the fork. While rebound high-speed is still found down below in the adjuster bolt housed in the fork lug. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Due to the sandy nature and head produced in Daytona, radiator fans were abundant. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Matching lids for Star. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Haiden Deegan's SMX champion colors blend into the retro theme well. Also, GoPro has joined Star as a sponsor for 2024. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Hunter Lawrence "You're never too good to carry your own boots mate" Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Dylan Ferrandis has partnered with Niner bikes in 2024. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Benny Bloss placed Beta into their first-ever top ten finish in US Supercross! Michael Lindsay
Place holder
While the team was busy preparing Colt Nichols' bike for his return this coming weekend in Alabama. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Like many small Kawasaki teams or privateers, the Madd Parts crew chose to stay on the outgoing generation Kawasaki due to how late the new bike arrived. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
FCP front engine mounts can be found on Freddie Noren's machine. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Cheyenne Harmon's bike giving off Martini racing vibes. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Max Anstie has to hold the weirdest opening three-race score to have the points lead. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Narco Nate applying grip tape to Max Anstie's frame winglets. The Lawrence trend is slowly catching on. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
The Firepower crew is doing their darnest to keep up with the Factory level 250 teams. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
The firepower team has relocated their ECU to the front of the frame and taken away from Honda's unusual place behind the mudguard/rear wheel. Is HRC's 250 ECU up here? Nope, it's hidden in the airbox due to the heavily redesigned airbox that team uses. The HRC 250s have a steering damper up here. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
In prior races we saw Anstie use a bright red linkage with Factory Connection logos. Now it's raw silver. HRC part? Nope. It's still a Factory Connection link but a new design specifically for Supercross that they're working on. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
I dare you to find a rider and mechanic pairing that get along better than Seth Hammaker and Jacob Martin. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Sound form around the extra drilled intake ports of Chance Hymas' machine. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Chance Hymas has a piece of home with him at the races. However, a photo of a potato would do the trick as well. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
With the heat worries at Daytona, we were a little surprised to see the HRC 450s not dawn their oil coolers for this race. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
HRC's trucks have a cool nod to their riders.
Place holder
250s as well.
Place holder
Many of the factory teams bring their own wash carts to this round since you can't wash directly off the trucks in Daytona. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Fly Racing had a new LE to release in Daytona and had matching helmets for some of their athletes.  Michael Lindsay
Place holder
We wouldn't be shocked to see Casey Cochran in Supercross before East Coast SX is over. He needs one more SX Futures event to get his license, however. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
We saw a lot of Scoop tires in Daytona and even this latest one from Maxxis was on track. It's good to see moree tire parity in the sport Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Jared Lesher's popular YZ250 smoker. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
A NASCAR theme for the PRMX crew Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Cade Clason is Pure Adrenaline. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Ty Masterpool made his first main of the year. As we mentioned prior, many 450 privateers and small teams are still aboard the old-gen bike, including Masterpool. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Masterpool is still working with Pro Circuit for his full engine package. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
Again, the Lawrence wings are spreading. Michael Lindsay
Place holder
DO IT FOR DALE! See you all in Alabama. Michael Lindsay
