Bought it for $500 off a local guy. He gets them and just does some stickers and paint then flips, but it was complete and I love the old Yamahas.
Bike had sat for a while and crank was frozen solid. Some water and rust on stator side.
Bought a used crank on eBay and will see if I can get it running. Plan on doing some mid Atlantic vintage hare scramble races. Have an ‘88 rm 250 that I race earlier in month and now hooked on vintage.
Oh, and that shock is massive. Like how it rides in the backbone of frame.

Let's see some more pictures. I had a 1976 Yamaha DT250 when I was a kid. I beat the life out of that thing and it never quit. Lots of fun on that bike. My dad gave it away when I moved on to a real, modern motocross bike. I wish he wouldn't have. It would have been fun to restore it.

Cool project. I've raced a 79 YZ400 and YZ465 in the last few year in the local vintage series. That motor is similar to what is found in the 78/79 YZ250 and 79-81 IT250. They also didn't change much on the chassis as I have a 81 IT425 frame hanging from the ceiling of the shop that I was going to use on my YZ400 (different airbox arrangement). Those shocks are fun and I rebuilt a few. Modern seal heads and a modern valving do wonders as do adding a remote reservoir. The 79 YZ shock and swingarm are a great update too if you can swing it.

Crank bearings out. Bought used crank on eBay.waiting on some seals and new bearings before assembly. Seems like the old crank bearings seized and right seal was pushed out partially. Bike was then cast aside and water / rust ensued. Just some pics of bearings out.

Love the old manual. 10w30 was so versatile.

Finally got the bike back together and what do you know? Fires right up. Love old smokers.

Yup nice and simple yet do the job pretty well for being "out dated" compared to the modern bikes. Find some KTM pegs to replace the old narrow ones, you have to grind off some material but they are sooo much nicer on your feet.

Now the real question is what is the yamaha sled in the background. Looks like a full send it type of sled to me. Wink
