2000 KX 250 pro circuit berg racing

Edited Date/Time 11/13/2022 12:36pm
I was very fortunate to pick this bike up 18 months ago from the original owner. Me and a friend heard about it through word of mouth, someone was selling “Jeff Emigs” bike. I wasn’t very curious, but my buddy went to check it out anyways. We both assumed it was a close to stock kx with Emigs name on it.

So my buddy sends me some pics and said it was definitely not Emigs bike, but was really trick none the less. It turned out to be a 00 250.. and I went and picked it up.

I’ve never done a build thread, I don’t have a fancy garage or any of that. I also don’t have much of a build plan other than the 02 PC simple green graphics and seat cover.

The bike had been sitting 10+ years, so I’ll show you what the insides of the master cylinders looked when I pulled them apart.

Here is the bike in the original owners garage the day I picked it up.

Here is the bike currently, along with a couple spare parts and pictures of the master cylinders. The clamp on the PC perch was cracked in half, so I stripped a newer clamp and polished it. I may run the ARC clamp on the front brake master cylinder also.

The handlebars are temporary, all of that will be cleaned up when I find some silver renthals. Can’t decide between twin walls or 7/8, I believe I have a set of 7/8 PC mounts that will fit the emig clamps

The master cylinders came out pretty good. Tomorrow I’ll be putting new hoses on the carb and putting the stock air box on. I plan on riding this bike so I don’t want to risk damaging it. I’m trying to find carbon fiber frame guards that are currently still made, It looked like a place in Italy made them, but I haven’t received a response from them.

I would also like to get some PC triple clamps at some point

So while I’m waiting for some Ti hardware and oem stuff, I pulled the subframe off to change out the airbox. I noticed the stock airbox was previously drilled for the streamliners, which is cool, because I’d bet the original owner still has them somewhere along with the carbon Ti silencer. (Hoping he finds both).

I was able to find the right side streamliner on eBay a while back and restored it out of boredom. I don’t expect to find a new set, let alone just a left side, but I was happy with how it came out.

I was thinking about trying to mold the carbon frame guards and replicating them, but I have no clue what I’d be getting myself into at the moment, so I’ll do some research before I decide to give that a try.

I’ll be freshening up the suspension when I get time, I have the parts sitting around so i just need to kick my ass into gear. I’ve read most people run an 80-120mm air gap with the Enzo sub tanks, so I’m hoping to measure the current level when tearing the forks down. The forks don’t appear to be leaking at all

The air filter started falling apart when taking it off, so I ordered a maxima pre oiled to hold me over until the DT1 site through hook-it is back up

I found this CDI in the Rubbermaid container that came with the bike. Does anyone know what it is? I asked around and no one seems to know, including the previous owner

I haven’t had any time to work on the kx, at the moment I have 3 bikes that’s don’t belong to me in my garage. Luckily I got rid of one this morning, but it got replaced by a friends blown up 450.

I have however been busy parts shopping. I’ve met some solid people that were willing to sell the hard to find parts and I’m very thankful for that. I don’t have a plan for the kxf clamps at the moment, but I’m glad I have them for a future project.

My graphics and seat cover should be here soon, I’m excited for that

How about a picture of the subframe? Looking at it from the top?

Thank you Robert. I have my eye on your pc clamps.. I’m trying not to go for it lol.

I’ll get better pics of the subframe this weekend. I assumed it was AC racing, I believe it’s lowered 10mm.

I picked this up with the intention of making it look brand new.. we will see how that goes. I don’t want to ride with the current works pipe because it’s perfect and hasn’t been repaired before.

I think I only soaked them in a gallon of carb cleaner for a few minutes and hit them with a brush. I was surprised how good it came out

It looks like you have a carbon front floating rotor? This is the second one I’ve ever seen.

Yeah. I actually saw a 99-01 for sale a couple weeks ago that looked to have one. It had a bunch of good stuff

The original owner had a scratch book with magazine cut outs and phone numbers. I believe it’s the rotor and mount in the top of this page. He even had his prescription for cti knee braces in it

Hey there,

Came across this post when randomly browsing bike builds. First off, awesome job with the restoration. Love to see the carbon fiber bits, especially the rare ones. Wanted to mention Greg Berg unfortunately passed away a few weeks ago, and your build is definitely doing his work justice. This build helps spread on his legacy within the industry. Just wanted to share the news and appreciation of his recognition. I knew Greg for my entire life, and was fortunate enough to see his progression through the years of working with Kawasaki factory racing, creating various products for SixSixOne, and eventually WPS up in Boise. The stories that Ross Maeda from ENZO shared within his latest Facebook posts about Greg are fantastic too.

This is a stock pipe that was sand blasted, hit with a scotchbrite pad and rubbed with oil. years later it is still holding up great. Cost was $10 for the blasting lol.

That’s unfortunate, another member was telling me about it last week. I didn’t know anything about Greg besides the tie with him and Ross. He definitely made some amazing parts.

The bike came with all the good parts, which is taking fun out of the build. But I have acquired quite a few good parts myself and plan on doing another full build so it’s actually “mine”. I have almost everything besides another set of steam liners.

Good eye. The original owner was fiends with Ross and was able to get some cool stuff. I don’t plan on using it for any build that I actually ride. Eventually I’ll build a 100% garage queen and have something to put it on

Greg was an awesome dude. We texted all the time between he and my dad, while also competing in the current RMFantasy SX league for this year's supercross season. Greg's ties with Kawasaki factory racing were through the team's previous race shop manager, Norm Bigelow. Norm now works at Pro Circuit. I believe the first year Norm had asked Greg about producing the carbon fiber airbox was for the '97 or '98 year model bikes. I still have a pair of the carbon fiber fork guards he used to make too. Back in the mid-90's, he and my dad teamed up to produce carbon fiber mountain bike fork shafts when my parents used to own Atomic Shocks, previously Anti-Gravity Shocks. He is also known for producing one of the first automatic clutches for the KX60, which Mike Alessi tested for him when Mike was a kid. Stories for days.

White carbon fiber fork guards.

Sorry I haven’t done much of an update, I started a new job and I’m still trying to settle in. I’ve picked up more parts for my future build(s).

I picked up some more carbon frame guards that are in pretty rough shape. I’m going to try and refinish them as best I can. I’m not very experienced with carbon fiber work at all so if I mess these up, I’m not out a whole lot. They will end up on this build anyway

Small update. I rebuilt the shock and installed the graphics/plastics. The replica seat cover will not line up with the graphics which will really bother me… but I do have a new all black pro circuit seat cover that I will try to run. At this point it’s easy to tell I’m not making an exact replica, so I figure why not run the better quality, better looking seat cover.

I cleaned the linkage (10+ year old chain wax is no joke) and swapped out the links for other PC links that have slightly more wear. I will save the others for a future build.

I’m also waiting for some purple twin walls to come in, then I will service the forks and install the PC triple clamps. I am not a fan what so ever of the carbon sub tanks on the forks, but I will be riding this bike so I want it to be good, so they will be staying on for now.

Sorry to here about your friend Greg. I used some of his KX60 parts on my sons race bike back in 98. They made an adjustable rear link and auto clutch you mentioned which I have. But sadly I think it’s missing a couple parts but can’t find installation diagram anymore.

After some clear coat on the frame guards, new tires, and fork service, I should be able to hit the track and see if I can get used to this stink bug

A couple small updates. I finished the frame guards and am pretty happy with them. I installed the streamliners with ti button top bolts and I’m not sure if Ill keep it that way. The airbox had holes from previous streamliners, but they didn’t line up right with mine.

I also made a carbon brace for the mud guard and it came out decent, I’m not a big fan of the high gloss, but maybe after running it a bit, it will look better
