He was disqualified the prior race for going backwards on the track when he was stuck on a hill is the story I believe. So the next race he showed them how he could legally ride backwards on the track. I think he stopped before the finish and crossed the line this way taking a victory. He talked about it in his documentary.

The '70s and '80s seemed like magical eras. Maybe because I was a kid in the '70s, and the '80s were when the riders in the US riders really became competitive at the MXDN races, but it was surely a cool time to be involved in the sport.

Yup. From JODY’S TRUE STORY OF SUICIDE MOUNTAIN on MXA's website:

"The biggest controversy at Suicide Mountain in 1983 came when Danny “Magoo” Chandler crashed on the first plateau on the last lap of moto one. Rather than kick start his works Honda, Danny rolled it down the hill, bump-started it and pulled in front of fourth place rider Alan King. Magoo drag raced the Suzuki factory rider up Suicide Mountain and went on to finish third. The AMA disqualified Magoo for riding backwards on the track."

The 70s were awesome. Lots of 40 man gates for 125s and sometimes 2 or 3 divisions. Crappy bikes until about 73 though.

We can bank on the fact that Magoo is smiling/laughing behind the guard. He was a crowd pleaser and a down to earth good dude, RIP Mr. Magoo.

The earliy 70s was the most fun. MX was just getting popular in the states. I was in NC. The racing was pretty small then. I won my first trophy for 2nd in 72 in the 500 class on a BSA Gold Star.

Then I got a real MX bike a 73 Suzuki TM250. I thought I was Joel Robert.

73 - 75 I raced a few tracks in Eastern NC. It was like $3.50 to enter. They didn't have enough for diffferent levels of rider classes back then. If you rode a 250 you all rode together. I remember getting $15 for first, $10 for second and $5 for third. I was making money as long as got a top three. Gas was 50 cent a gallon. It was a wonderful time.[img]
