I'm planning on going to the U of Utah for college and eventually moving out there permanently. A dream of mine is to own land with a good-sized MX track on it. About how much land would I need and what regulations would I have to follow? Just curious.

Don't have the answer you’re looking for, but just popping in to say that parts of Utah are awesome.

It takes 2-3 acres for a decent 6 lane sx-style track. My track uses 3.5 acres and is a 55 sec lap time for a fast guy, 1:02 for me (below). Can you build one will depend on local code, officials, and location (neighbors). Water is your biggest requirement. As many have discussed here, dust and noise get you shut down fast. You have to mitigate both.

I've got a track on a pretty square 2 acres. Its really not enough for a full size bike.

Also, worth noting, if this is a goal you hope to achieve while at the U. There is not anywhere near the campus you would be able to really do something like this. You would be hard pressed to find any land at all in Salt Lake County really. In the end you could do it up North, say Brigham city or more North, or possibly West around Tooele. I guess anything is possible with enough money and since I don't know the budget either, that might make all this pointless. You should however check out the OCA track by Willard Bay in the Ogden Area, I have always thought it a really good place to ride. There is also miles and miles and miles of public land to ride on just south west (little saraha) or the west of SL county (the knolls).

You’ll have to be made of money to do it in UTah. Prices for land out here are insane right now. It can be done but the places that it’s easiest to do is not where you’d want to live (Roosevelt, park valley, west desert etc.

Dude, why worry about it if you are just starting college. There are 2 good tracks within 15 minute drive of campus, best kept secret in moto. Get yourself an ebike too and go mob the trails in the hills surrounding campus and the urban riding at the U is epic!

You are stoked!

Definitely not going to do it until I get out of college but I'm just curious and want to get a head start on all of this now!

I'm going for a BS in Computer Hardware Engineering so I hope to be pretty well off! Haha

Let's hope in that property prices go back to normal soon though!

I plan to move down south a little way's after I graduate to where it's a little more rural. I need to get back out there to Utah and scope out some of these moto tracks in the meantime. Thanks.

What are the top tracks in Utah? Or even just good open riding areas to cut in turn tracks? I've considered a job transfer out there at a sister location of my work.

Jordan River OHV by the SLC airport is public track, OCA in Ogden is private/club, Mountain West in Mona is public but has water problems, Bunkerhill is a public track that has good elevation and sand in Delta, Steadmans MX in Tooele is public.
RMX is a fantastic series. They also run practice days at various tracks.

chances are you wont be living in utah after you graduate as your work in whatever field you wind up in will not be there.

Not sure about hardware but Oracle, Facebook, Adobe all have large offices / facilities out here. Just south of the city is ‘silicon slopes’ which is the next Silicon Valley that’s a lot of tech companies are moving to.

As a fellow Ute, ping me if you make it down south towards Moab. I live about 4 hours from you in the Grand Junction/Fruita area and we have awesome riding, tons of secret tracks and jumps carved into the adobe hills. And you can pretty much ride year round.

When I was driving from Eagle Mountain (Facebook Campus) back to SLC airport, I passed what looked like a small maybe 5 acre farm with a killer small MX/SX track behind some out buildings and the house. Rich black dirt, lots of jumps, not sure who owns the track, but it looked like an area full of houses / small farms. Can't remember the road I was on, but always wanted to drive back that way!

Not sure on the track but there’s miles and miles of single track at eagle mountain.
