When did he ride the Cernics KTM 250 two stroke? I remember he raced the 125 east in 2002 for them but always thought he rode the 520SX outdoors.

It was 2003,If I remember right he was having clutch problems on the 520 the year before where the engine heat was affecting the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder so he rode the 2 stroke in 2003,

dowdy is a proper legend- to still be competetive at such a high level at his age (and manage to keep his national number) is absolutely amazing! How cool would it be if he could keep it until he is 50?!

A bit Off Topic,

But IMHO the gear that MC is wearing in this pic is some of the sharpest stuff that Fox ever made!

i really liked the fox gear of that era- think they have lost their way with the designs over the last few seasons (maybe just me getting old?) - although this season seems to be a step in the right direction (i prefer the more plain designs than the loud, looks like someones been sick all over it design!)

didnt even touch a bike until he was 16. turned pro at 29, and took mike craigs factory ride.

for that, he'll always be the fucking man.

if someone can dig up a photo from him at daytona 1994, i believe that is when he actually is riding mike craigs bike, with a 3 digit number, in the 250 class.

Glad you brought that up. I was thinking the same thing. Dowd's Fox stuff was also some of the best looking that Fox has put out.

The yellow and black Fox gear MC wore in 97 was the coolest ever, followed closely by the 99 line IMO. But The first year of NoFear was really bad ass. I think that was 99 as well

john dowd is def one of my heros......not because of his age now, but because he started late and still made it to top level of our sport.

i read in an MXA interview that Henry said when he races southwick at a local venue with dowdy he has to go faster then at a national...

i promised myself from a young age that if/when i have the finances to dedicate myself to racing i would have a go at it.....john dowd proved it to be possible.

maybe not so much these days, but hey..stranger things have happened, right?

I have John Dowd's KTM 250 that he rode to 2nd OA at Southwick in 2003 behind Carmichael, signed by him... twice. I think it may be time to sell it. Tim

Hey Tony. I know this is an old thread but was wondering if you could help. I just aquired John Dowds 1991 Hangtown mud race helmet. The only pic I can find of him wearing this helmet is from his 91 Hi Flyer card. This was his first national to win and he was a privateer at the time. Would be very much appreciated if you or anyone has another pic of him with this helmet. Thanks---Chad

I've got a set of gear from high point of his. It's the blue stuff when he was 14. 98 or 99 I think.

Awesome pics thanks for sharing! John is a great guy and as humble as they come. I will pass this pic along to Ron Bushey, he will love it!

That helmet is awesome- even has the rip from the duct tape. That's worthy of the AMA museum- pretty sweet.

Cycle news pic.

Watched a youtube moto world highlight of the race. Forgot Bayle wore an open face at that one. Guessing that was the last time anyone used an open face at a pro event.
