Some riders get it in their heads it's all messed up and keep changing stuff, some riders just go out and beat it up!

Webb pretty much saying why test so much, it's not the bike that needs changes, it's the rider.

Love it!!

Webb keeping it real. You can always be searching for settings. Sometimes you just need to go out and ride.

Yep Coop has a lot of old school moto running thru his veins, probably why he's been one of my favorites to root for the last three years.

And some riders have over 40 wins (including 3 over the age of 30) and 2 championships.
Perspective, folks.

They say Dungey is always refining his setup as well. Seems to work pretty good for him.

I have to admit, when I saw Reed's finish I immediately wondered if the Yamaha team made him go back to his season opening setup......!

Cool

Reed got another horrible start, 16th at the end of lap one.

I think I will go with Reed, as this is his 12th SX season on a 450. He probably has a good idea of how he wants his bike set up vs. A guy with five races in.

So not too terribly different than San Diego really.

Reed is obviously one of the greatest SX racers of all time, there's really no question about that. He definitely seems to make it a bit more mental than some, though. I guess I'm too critical of him sometimes, but I just keep remembering when he'd be getting beat by Carmichael or Stewart and every podium interview he'd talk for a bit, then say "But hey, no excuses", then rattle off a half dozen excuses.......

I'd like to see more of the Reed from Arizona on the track, though! Rides like that could really make this an interesting season!

I think what web is saying it that what works on the practice track isn't working on race day.
In essence, race day has become test day.

Webb excelled at a rate faster than usual for the 450 class, especially during today's standard. What was intended on being a learning year for him turned into his first podium night already. Battling with Eli alone was outstanding for a rookie. He's right there, needs a holeshot on a track he's comfortable pushing 20 minutes on.

Watching Webb in qualifying was impressive. Not just his jumping, but also slamming through those qualifying whoops like no other.

Its almost as if bike set up has turned into some sort of arbitrary mythical phenomenon.

Oh jesus, yes! Yes! Hearing the word "setup" makes my head hurt, it's used so much. I understand that there is actually a skill to setting up a bike for your liking, but it's used ten million times per season. Growing up with mx in the 80's and 90s, I never, ever heard the rider talk about "setup". I think it's a catch-all word at this point, used as a nebulous term to explain away bad performances. I never heard Bob Hannah say "setup" at any point, but I do remember him calling his bike a "giant tub of shit" lol. Setup!

It's funny how the bikes are so perfect (comparitively) now, but to hear the riders talk about it , every bike they ride is so far off the mark that it takes the entire season to unlock it's mysteries. Don't they keep notes on what they used last year lol?

If anything, It is the other way around when you are at the top. 20% rider, 80% bike. Bike setup makes all the difference in the world and is what decides if you will be competitive or not.

Roczen, Tomac, Dungey, Reed. They all changed the setup on their bikes and after that became top 3 competitive again. Bike setup makes 1-3 sec per lap depending on outdoor or supercross and that is the margin you have to be on the podium or not. If you listen to all the race interviews in outdoor for example, you can hear in all of them "we made som adjustments to second heat and it was the right/wrong direction".

Can it be a head game? Sure to a small limit, but these guys are no rookies.

A few clicks off/misdialed and it is not your night.

It is because the 80,90, part of 2000 riders would be considered standing still when todays guys blow by them. The bikes are so much better (lighter, balanced) today, and so are everything around them. That makes them more sensitive to bike setup.

Of course they do, BUT, new bike or year, new team, new suspension all changes that. You heard Tomac, he did not touch his bike or setup from MEC last year since they thought it was perfect.

Went into A1, not competitive. No way to know that unless you race or practice with people that are as fast as you, and some riders dont do that for various reasons.

I would love to hear how either Coop or Chad have had everything given to them.

Cooper has a long way to go to become anything near to what Chad has been and still is to this sport.

Same, one of the few riders from that era that I care to root for!
Once he finds his feet can see some fun rivalries developing.

Still wondering what Cooper said straight up, because it sure isn't what a lot of people in here think it was.

What is it? Do you think he's not being honest?

straight up:
to be honest, to not lie, to not hide things behind other's backs.
