Today I went for a little ride on my dad's KX500 and noticed that rear fender went all wobbly whenever I gave more throttle. I called to local motorcycle shop and they said that I probably broke the power band! I wonder how much is the new power band or can you fix the old one? It's 1989 KX500 with FMF Fatty pipe and Cycra front number plate.

Dude, I'm really sorry about your luck. I have heard OEM powerbands are really hard to find and can sell for astronomical prices. It also depends on which color you want, and the tension of the band. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy them individualy for every gear, rather then buy one that will work in all gears. Don't buy the China knockoffs either, they can work erratically and cause a bad crash. Good luck with the repair bro, you are going to need it. (get a service manual)

To save money, especially on a 500, you really only need power bands in 2, 3rd and if you're really going Dogger style, 4th gear. You might be able to take them off the other gears. On the 500, the load demand and power available spindles are wound pretty tight so watch your fingers if you do take them off. Laughing

That's a very good point Toomey, safety is critical when dealing with such tightly wound elastic pieces that can become lethal projectiles if not handled properly. 500s are the most dangerous, use extreme caution or consult a powerband expert before attempting such a dangerous repair yourself.

You forgot to mention the Muffler-Bearing and the KIPS Regulator-Rectifier!

Not totally sold on being a bad power band. You could have a worn or damaged piston return spring. I know Sphincter Bros.makes a piston return spring out of unaitanium.

Have you checked the tire fluid recently? Probably running low. Sorry about your luck though!

That's exactly why you shouldn't do AF conversions while under the influence of Jägermeister.

This also shows why you should not polish the shit out of your aluminum frame!

How was it running before it broke? A little lag or bog prior to coming on like the space shuttle? If so, your power valve actuator has some slop in it. If you put a new power band in it you'll have the same problem in no time. The cheapest fix is to go old school and take all the junk out of it. No power valves, power bands or, reed valves and you've got a fire breathing, piston port, plug whiskering brute of a bike that anyone born before 1965 would be proud to own. Keep us updated please.

The "Roll it off a cliff" advice sounded so easy and cheap fix, we decided to try it again with my friends CR500 (because I was thinking that this advice works only with 500 cc bikes). I was right, it actually helped and the power band of my friends CR500 is now ok, but the rest of the bike is not.

If you ever are in a pinch out on the trail you can use a Trojan condom, preferably magnum, in place of a powerband to limp the bike home. Had to dip into my stash once when I crashed in the middle of the desert, at night, leading the Baja 1000 a few years back to get to my next check point where factory honda installed another one of their HRC kevlar reinforced one's for me.

I like the swingarm sticker that says OZWeld maybe? Time to take it back to Ozweld and have them weld it again.
