Dan Dunes would know. Hell he could of been a little kid standing there while it was being filmed.

I know the track was near Castaic junction but I always wondered where exactly. Can anyone point me specifically to the area?

Also, do you guys remember the CHiPs episode where Bruce Penhall was riding a motocross track? Is there a youtube video of that?

1. International Track
2. Mini Track? Not sure about that. Never raced minis.
3. Speedway Track.
4. No clue. Never saw that one.
5. ½ Mile (I think) Oval. Tested a Midget there once.
6. Don’t know.
7. Shadow Glen Track. My personal favorite.
8. Play area. GP’s would cross the river, but I don’t remember any tracks on the south side of the river.

I liked shadow glen a lot also. The GP track and the International track were sort of next to each other, but I think that was after the photo.
There are some guys in old school moto that probably remember better than me.

3. Flat Track/Speedway
4. Practice Speedway (tried it a few times and sucked haha)
5. 1/2 Mile Oval
6. Was just a start area near the Shadow Glen, They ended up building another practice track over there.
7. Shadow Glen (mine too Shawn)
8. Play area. We did build a couple cool little tracks up there.

That about recaps my 500+ races there hahaha.

Yep. Indian Dunes mini track. Below is pictures from 72 and 74. The track layout is a little different in the later video. When I rode on it, it had a long straightaway where the kid in the video gets taken out. The first NMA World Mini Grand Prix was on this track in 1972 I think. Then in got moved to the International track in 73 or 74. There is a Sports Illustrated article from the World Mini Grand Prix on this track with Kurtie Hendrickson on the cover from back in the day.
The track is right underneath the number 3, just above the 1/4 mile oval on Ariel photo that langhammx posted.

Hey Richard, didn’t O’Mara have a track up in the hills also?

I’ve heard so many stories from my pops about the Dunes. Wish us younger guys could have enjoyed it.

Thats on the minicycle track,I must've put in a million laps on that track as a kid in the 70's.
For those who were lucky enough to ride at Indian Dunes, who remembers the snack bar right next to the mini track? Best chili fries in history!

Anyone ride the viewfinders grand prix in the early 70's at the Dunes?
I can't remember if it went up into the hills or just crossed the water a few times.
I think the start was in the sand and was real long? getting old, can't remember stuff anymore.

Loved when the GPs ran through the old Black Sheep Squadron TV set right past the Shadow Glen track!

Damn, I’m so old, but thank you all for the fond memories this morning! I loved The Dunes! Spent damn near every Friday night and Sunday there trying to go faster!

It was the worst having to go do slide turns on the oval tracks AFTER racing all day.

My first race was the ‘77 Viewfinders GP.
Up in the mountains, water jump, water crossings, dead man start in the sand wash.
What a crazy 1st race... I had no idea what I was in for. 2 hours+ long.
I won the 80 beginner race, there were 25 guys in my class. Good times !!

Looks like Indian Dunes. I think the reason for confusion is this race actually took place on 3 different tracks located within Indian Dunes; The start of the race looked like it was filmed on the mini track up in flat middle of the park, Jumped to the Shadow Glen track down by the river, then the race moved to the International track but they were running backwards from how it was raced every Sunday

#3 identifies the speedway track, the mini track is underneath the #3 in the pic (above the speedway) I don't believe what is labeled as the mini track is correct, that is either outside the park or was used for pits on race day

At one point didn't they have a tt style track sort of near the entrance, possibly near #4?

Yes they did, it was across the road from the Shadow Glen. That TT track was fun.
Damn we had it good,2 really good Moto tracks, the TT track, the river bed & sand wash, plus the hills across the the river.

I don't know. I watched it a few times and recognize every part of the film as being on the mini track. From about 37 sec to 40 sec it almost looks like the International track but its a couple edited shots coming down the hill where the start straight meets up with the main track at the bottom. You can see the backside of the wooden wall for the 1/4 mile ( 3/8 mile ? ) oval in the background of the left hander at about 40 sec.

Actually I thought Dan Dunes or someone whos Dad managed the track or something was actually one of the kids riding in the film. I remember a post about it.

I had my first beer ( first taste of beer) sitting in the stands watching 1/4 midget cars practice on the oval. I was 9 or 10 years old my Dad had his 71 TS250, I was spinning laps on the mini track on my SL-70. Took a break and got some hot dogs from the snack bar. My old man got a Coors in the steel can. I can still smell that Coors beer. I asked him what it tasted like. He didn't say anything he just handed me the beer and I took a few drinks. I didn't know it at the time but 46 years later its still one of my best memories.
