One problem. Well lots of problems with that actually. Who's gonna take those kids to the track and do all the proper maintenance on the bike? Who's gonna buy them gear and gas and fix shit when it breaks? If the kids are underprivileged they are poor. No moneys for dirtbike shit. Most likely nobody to help them. It's a nice thought but not feasible. I don't really know what the answer is but just smashing them to shit seems really stupid. Esp the newer bikes.

Sorry if it's been posted but why not call folks who had bikes stolen and never returned and let them pick one out? some may be in okay shape. Also what if little Billy who worked all summer cutting lawns for his dirtbike, decided to do a quick test ride up the street, so they crushed it instead of giving a ticket that would suck.
The Queens impoind yard did call in the case I was involved in. Canadian RM250 with VIN scratched off. They still somehow identified and called the owner (who had vehcile info and reported stolen in New Jersey).

Can't say they do that with all bikes.

Im glad they're crushing these bikes. These shitbags go to auctions and buy them back for a hundred bucks. Then they're legally owned and start terrorizing the streets again. .

Ohio state patrol is crushing the bikes in Cleveland because Cleveland won't do shit about it.
Hopefully he lubed the chain first.

If they are buying the bikes "for a hundred bucks", the municipality is doing an extremely poor job of notifying the public about its auctions. EXTREMELY poor. These bikes have value, leave it to the government to not give a fuck. The government is really good at doing the worst possible job at the greatest possible cost.

and as far as the VIN missing bikes go, every state has a process to issue a new vin, usually an official looking sticker- essentially giving a machine with a damaged vin, or a custom build that never had a vin, a new identity.

If this were the private sector, the new VIN process would be streamlined and these bikes would be sold for a fair price. Since it is government, the bikes are wasted, money is actually lost in the time and effort required to destroy the bikes, nobody has gained anything. So goes the city, so goes the state, so goes the country. Fuck it, uncle obama can print a few billion more dollars, the government can go on wasting resources, blowing money on bullshit, just generally swirling around the drain

That was my point. I have a buddy who buys bikes at the NPA auction and resells them. Those crushed bikes are far from worthless. I can't tell you how many total POS's that get over a grand. The reality is that the police does a shity job at this because there are zero repercussions for doing so.

I think it's nice they would like to do something about this problem instead of let it happen a la Baltimore. I haven't seen the bikes confiscated but it might be that the VINs are gone so the rightful owner can no longer be found, nor can the bike be sold. Also, the amount they'd get for such bikes likely isn't worth the cost and potential legal liability for selling them.

I've heard that, while most of these bikes are stolen, they are frequently sold at a low price by the few thieves out there doing the "work". This could have the effect of cooling that market down if the "buyer" knows that his $600 will be run over. Or if he won't be able to illegally ride it on the street.

I am not sure it's the "right" strategy since I don't have all the facts but I am happy they're trying to do something to stop it instead of nothing.
This is a forum about dirtbikes filled with people who love dirtbikes. Dont rack your brain too hard.

All politics aside, or considered, no one here wants to see perfectly good dirtbikes get crushed.

Late to this party, their reasoning for not auctioning them off was that they did not want the same people they took them from buying them back and riding them again on the street. Complete bs answer. As well I really hope they checked if they were stolen, the ones that are clearly numbered and stickered like MX bikes, may very well be MX bikes. Most people will not ride their race bikes through the streets, so I would bet it is a stolen bike.
