As per the track interviewer...

Pierre Karsmakers winning the 1s "Monster Energy SX championship" ?

The "Monster" part... LOL.

As far as record books... yeah, in the 250 class (which was'nt the premier class, by then), on a Yamaha.

He won Daytona, that's for sure (Roger won in the 500 class that day).

That year, Yamaha put together their "Superseries", consisting of Daytona and Houston (with a pretty whopping $48k purse, in 500 though, I think).

Then was the Coliseum race, that was by itself.

But the AMA, although that happened only later on, grouped these results altogether and Pierre came out an overall champion.

Fair enough !

Especially after Pierre got denied a 1st AMA championship (MX 500) the year before.

The Gary Jones camp (which was to be tighly associated with... Yamaha!) had successfully protested Karsmakers because "he was'nt a US resident".

Pierre cleared that point for '74 and so became a US champion, although, really, the first "true" SX championship series happened only in 1975 (with one more race - Dallas).

But Pierre coming "all the way from Belgium" ??

Mmmmhhhh...

Let's say Holland.

Seen from California, probably not a big difference.

But definitely a different country.

Great post Xavier. Pierre is the racer who taught US racers the importance of training. i also remember Pierre fell prey to over training at some point and then made changes. Still a important point today to always need to have plenty in the tank come race day.

BTW I remember Stackable would put in a 450 motor for Daytona and run a 400 Maico elsewhere.

Bit like saying Chad Reed comes from America......sure Chad would love that one. National pride is pretty important even for the euros. Imagine saying Brad Lackey was from Belgium when he won his World title......

It was an embarrassment to the sport and the man himself, but what do you expect from a Monster commercial.

They should make a public apology to him on next weeks show and correct their mistake... But I'm sure they wont.

What's it matter.... only one non-American (Matt Moss) qualified for the main events, so who cares?

Or it's like when they say "Ken Roczen won the World Championship over in Europe"..... ummm so that'd be a European Championship then?

I was at Daytona in 74 ,11yrs old.

Left parents in stands and went into the infield, found a place were a bunch of bikers had pulled the fence down and I walked right into the pits.

Saw shit I didn't know what I was seeing. The track crossed the pitroad then and went into the grass of the international horseshoe.

Good times

He's Dutch
Born and raised Dutch, doesn't matter the nationality of who he is married to or presently residing, he's Dutch

His family, (brother, nieces, nephews, etc) are still in The Netherlands

You're saying that even though I am an American, born and raised, if I moved to Paris, that makes me French.
Even if I got French citizenship and passport, I'd still be an American, and not just in my mind, but also to every Parisian

In a couple places they did mention, "...what's now known as Monster Energy Supercross..."

But yeah, it didn't always get mentioned that way, and it was a little cringe-worthy. And the Belgium thing? That's almost as embarassing as Stefan Everts being able to walk around unnoticed in the pits here.

It looked like Pierre had a blast on his trip.

He won the 250 tht day by a huge margin.

I'd like to see that track today, all I recall are singles to flat.

Where they crossed the pitroad was a huge hole dug out and the lip of tarmac make for many a flyin W
