I have a son that is currently on a PW50 and he is almost five. I'm going to start get him into racing next year. I'm just not sure if I should keep him on his PW until he is old enough to jump to a 65 like I did when I started out racing. I'm just not sure if it is worth getting him a race bike that he is only going to be on for 2-3 more years. I welcome any in sight that anyone has on this matter thanks.

Get him on a race bike. He is going to be way behind the other kids when he hits the 65's. Back when you did it everyone was in the same boat, things have changed

If you're going to race, get him a "real" bike.

If you feel he's fast enough for a race bike, get him the race bike. If he just cruises around the track, I don't see much point.

Race both classes drive shaft and get a cobra Jr and race the 4-6 and 4-8. You will find most 4-6 yr olds race both classes. I made the mistake in selling my boys pw and running the cobra only. Just my opinion and experience.Your going to get lots of answers for your question.

Speaking of Cobras how reliable are they. I notice this year in the special limited class at lorrettas most kids were on KTM mini's

Special limited is Oil injection. We had good luck with our Cobras, ktms were good too. All the race 50's take a little extra maintenance. But they have came a long way.

i kept trading up lil kid bikes in a used format, you really dont lose much money (if any) when you buy a used ktm 50, you will notice a huge difference between what was the 3 sized KTM 50s, and the naming (re-naming) is confusing as hell, sounds like your kid needs the mini, they stopped making the mini, any mini built after 2004 is good enough, the newer ones got liquid cooled.... BTW, the PW50 is a pile of shit!!! I boy gained a of confedence and grew chest hair the moment he got off that pile of shit turd poop bike

to be clear, the older mini was called the "mini adventure"

the cobras are too big and fast for a 4 yr old

Stay away from the Cobras. What we did and it has worked good was had the PW and then went to a KTM mini adventure. Transition was easy then you can go to a Sr pipe and carb to make it quicker. We just sold the MA as he has been riding it and a 65 lately and doing fine. You avoid the nightmare maintenance and it makes the jump not too bad that way. So raced PW and MA for a while then MA and 65. Lower cost as race 50s are a money pit. I would do it the same way if given the choice again.

You will get lots of info on cobratalk.com or ktmtalk.com. There are lots of options for your son. There are even slipper clutches for the little bikes that are adjustable. Just tread lightly. If you go on cobra talk asking about Ktm or vise versa you will be attacked. Lots of dads trying to live through their children it's almost sad sometimes. Just do what you think is best for your boy. No matter what he's gonna have fun just don't get him On an underpowered bike in the race classes. Good luck

Just let this one go a few months ago. Always leery when the parents show up with a kid who can not even touch the ground on their "new" bike. Whatever.......

Be ready to work on a race mini, no matter what brand.

Yes to Cobra all day. Had nothing but great luck with them. Don't buy dated old bikes from the past to race the special class, go race the kids in the age class. Anything else will handicap them and give you false illusions of where he's at.
