I was always confused as a kid as to how to pronounce his last name. I am embarassed to admit, I had no idea he got hurt like that.

A bit like this: https://translate.google.be/?hl=en&tab=wT#fr/nl/Malherbe but you have to drop the "e" at the end
No offence but you do realize us "americans" have different last names. Not just Smith.

Andre is the first rider I think of when I picture that classic "Euro style" from the late '70s - early '80s...elbows dug into his side, and his ass hardly ever left the seat. It's really amazing how fast he could go on those rough old tracks with that style.

The name of the girl in this picture is Sabine. My mum worked with her at an ice-cream parlour in Visé, Belgium called Le Pam-Pam, (pronounced Pum Pum), and my uncle Vicky went out with her briefly. All of this was well before she ended up with André obviously.

I know I'm an old fart but I just have to say that even though the sport has advancedin many ways; salaries, safety, technology...it most definately not increased in prestige. One reason, I believe is that the top guys continued to be of a younger age and just don't possess the experience or vocabulary to conduct a "grown up" interview. They come across as uneducated man-boys. I'm not saying modern riders are idiots but anyone can see the difference between then and now. Basically our current riders don't know much about anything but how to go really fast on a dirt scooter. Really good for getting on the podium but not so good for the type of sponsors with the really deep pockets. That damn Tony Cairoli may come across to us Mericans as arrogant but his old school attitude about being a champion is cool to me and I dig him for it.

I agree. But it's not just MX. Musicians have been replaced by "entertainers", reality TV stars are starting to replace actors, and man-boys are replacing men.

It's happening all around us. It's a sad state of affairs. Home schooling man.

I have heard that Andre rubbed some people the wrong way but IMO a lot of that is just the insecurity of the person he was dealing with.

Wow, that's a pretty cool connection and story. I love how the look so accurately exemplifies the times. You look at that outfit and you know you are looking at early 80s.

Wasnt there some famous photo of him (or someone) at Foxhills doing a double that no one thought was a double? I could be wrong, but that might be it. It was a pretty famous deal back in 82 or whatever.
You might be thinking of Jobe.

Just to get "off-track" a little... Okay, a lot. The crazy thing is that it was when my parents knew nothing more about MX other than what they would see on TV, and this was during the '70s.
My mum's parents were also friends with the Delepines, and their grandson Gérald would later become a Supermoto World Champion.

My parents moved to Aus from Belgium with my brother and sister in the late '70's and then a I came along a few years later, long after all this.
Where do they choose to settle? About 40 minutes from where Chad Reed was born and raised.
Santa brings me a PW, and I get to see the back of Chad Reed for a few corners, (if I was lucky), every weekend.

Funny how shit works out.
Bottoms upWink

Me, (on the Honda) saying au revoir to Chad at a local club day.Smile
EDIT: Crazy that he went to Belgium a couple of years after this...

Andre's Ferrari. He later showed up in Italy in 1985 in a brand new Testarossa.

Their daughter Cassandre is also extremely classy, beautiful, and successful.

For those that don't know he is one of the sport's greatest riders. Honda factory. 500cc world champ in 1980, 1981 and 1984. Bitter rival to Brad Lackey and one Roger DeCoster.

He was seriously injured racing Dakar after his moto career. Good to see him having some fun.

His friend Joel fonder I think is his name is the guy on the bike. Joel posts tons of personal pics of Andre so they must be good friends
