I have no idea. I know I was a copy cat.... especially the one handed crossup wheelie with peace sign. I performed it for a local British tv show back in the '70's. Trouble was...my bud had put on new grips with grease. When I lifted the front...the left grip slipped off and I flung it straight into the camera. I whiskey throttled straight toward the fence...luckily that Yamaha 400 turned like a knife. I grabbed the greasy bar and hooked a 90 right and saved it. The film crew thought it was all intentional and I didn't say differentWhistling

First time I saw a true cross up was 1973 at a race in Chetek WI. Guys name was Bruce. Can’t remember his last name but they called him Groovy Bruce. He raced a Suzuki TM 125. Maybe it was 1974.

Anyway. He invented it as far as I’m concerned.

Yes I stand corrected! That's the pic I remember and a similar pic of Joel in a cross up wheelie.

That’s a bit scrubbish, there. Seems there scrub is not an invention, but an evolution, born from the cross-up.

Hmm?? I guess that depends on the timing of the photo. Scrubbing isn't done just one way. It never has been. BMX guys from the 70's and 80's taught us this. Front tire pointing up is more old style for sure , and the tire pointing downwards is more of an aggressive way to get the bike back on the ground. " Inventing " the scrub happened many decades ago and evolved over time. People were scrubbing years before James was ever even born , but James took it to a whole new level. As did Trey Canard , that took it to an even more extreme level , which James himself even admitted. Where is the shame in that?

Everything in this sport ,. like all sports , evolve. That's why records keep getting broken. Everything cool you see today , was started by someone else , then improved. Never understood your stance on this. A " Scrub " started in BMX when we were young. James took what guys like MC were already doing , and changed it ( Evolved ) and started slamming that front wheel downward. But make no mistake , he didn't " Invent " it , he improved it , to a very high level. Just like guy's now have gotten even more extreme with it.

I’ve bought several bikes and SXS’s at Burt’s and they never taught me how to scrub. 😬

Sigh. There have already been pics shown and many have gone on record proving James did NOT invent it! He may have perfected it, but wasn’t the first to do it. What does it matter?
