I remember Reading about that. I believe the AMA banned all paddle tires after that one race. Didn't he win by a large margin as well....like totally smoked em'??

I lost my voice screaming for Hannah to pass him, every time he got close he got a face full of roost. Sweet memories.

I don't remember where I read it, but I remember the headline. 'Weinert paddles Hannah.'

Yup, I was there. The roost was nuts. Loved the sandy track.

Wasn't there a big write up on this story in Racer X a couple years back? Pretty cool!

Was the WHOLE track sand? Does any film footage of this race exist?

Yep, the entire track was sand. That's why the paddle tire was such a huge advantage. I've seen pics from the race but video would be awesome!!

Weinert is one of my all-time favorite racers. Who else would race a SX with a paddle tire and a neck donut...and win?!?! That thing must have blasted out some evil roost.

I was there! They supposedly used sand that was dredged from SF Bay.

So... I realize they banned the paddle tire after this race, but was there ever another "Sand Supercross" after this one? I'm pretty sure a paddle tire would work funky at Anaheim, lol. Or even Daytona for that matter...clunk, clunk, clunk, whoaaaa!!! Not much of an advantage there or ANY other SX since this Oakland round that Wienart won...It seems they banned entire sand SX's.

They probably got it from the company my dad works for which is right down the street.. They dredge the sand out of the bay shells and all.

It was a great race, my buddy and I drove down from Chico/Paradise and watched it from the left field stands. Very cool. It was luxury compared to our usual Hangtown, Sears Point adventures.

I wonder if SX goes to Levi Stadium next year?

The Super Bowl is there (Levi Stadium) next year so not sure if scheduling would work.

I spoke about this in another topic but Shaheen has talked about it before that they are (he is a big 49ers fan and was excited about it). Also in the plans when they built Levi was to have Supercross events. We will probably hear something about this on the show tomorrow night

Maybe we could beat Herlings with one of those at the next sand track race in Euroland.

that was a interesting day.
the tire was banned, but mostly because of what bobby said: the roost coming off that thing was awesome, but really dangerous to the other guys.
that sand had little shells in it, and the roost was like a giant spinning cheese grater coming at you.or mini ninja stars.
...and the amount of roost coming off weinert's bike was probably 4 or 5 times more than what came off a knobby.
brought a whole new meaning to "shredding a track".
