Just curious. Why is that the people who make a living from this sport no longer have a passion to do the very thing that produces customers for their product? Dudes like Wiegant, Matthes, Coombs, Shaheen, guyb, etc...... They can make a living doing something else. I hope they are not just doing it for income. Why don't they ride? I think Jody Wiesel from MXA who is over 60yrs old still races every weekend but I could be wrong.

I am 50 and will stop following this sport the second I stop participating.

What about guys like Ping, JT$, Craig Shoemaker, Showtime, and so many many more?

Heck I love sports illustrated swimsuit edition, but you'll never see me in a bikini! Hahaha.

Everyone wants to be in the "industry" of their favorite sport/pastime. Being someone who has been in several, if you love doing a sport and you have no hope of making a living as a professional. Get a job that pays well elsewhere that allows you the time to participate in your sport/pastime. Being a part of the "industry" seldom increases participation.

You can be a fan of a sport and not participate. I also used to question how guys like Weigandt and Mathes are so involved and don't ride. It's the same as me watching baseball and genuinely appreciating the skill and mental aspect of the game even though I never played anything more than HR derby and catch a few times growing up. There's certain things in life you enjoy watching and you leave it at that.

Good question. I don't get it either. Obviously you don't have to do the sport to follow, but you listed long time industry folks... I think the schedule for them dictate riding time if any.

But I will drop this here:

Never every to late to do what you love.

I went to the Transworld Industry Cup race and I'll you tell plenty of the industry rides and they are dam fast! I was impressed.

Ive been working in the snowboard industry for 10 years now and when through a few years were I hardly went to the mountain. You take things for granted and get sucked into other hobbys.

Bang on.. The instant you start doing what you do fun for a living, it turns in to the job you need to escape from. I have had a few great weekend gigs over the years, but I would rather do it for nothing for fun, than be getting paid and having to be there

Because the industry is about 8 people and they work A LOT. They either used to ride and were really good and now have moved onto other priorities (DC), or they used to ride and they sucked so they got good at writing or photography or wrench turning to keep MX in their life, or they never really rode but liked the sport and had those other talents (Weege), or they're just people who needed a job, and to them, your favorite MX shop or magazine was a local business.

1. No money in industry jobs.

2. The industry is incestuous. Walking on eggshells constantly. It's small. Very political.

Lots of reasons (excuses) I suppose, but it's becoming a problem.

We have saturation coverage of Pro racing, but little coverage of the issues and challenges facing the real people who drive this sport.

We are creating more and more race FANS, but less and less people are actually doing it.

I do feel if more members of our media were active participants we would have more attention paid to some of these things, rather than the trivial dramas in the SX pits.

Heres a start - have an industry podcast where people discuss why they don't race or ride anymore. Then throw around ideas of what it would take to bring them back as participants.

the industry insiders in every stick and ball sport don't suit up and play either. You can be a huge fan or supporter and not participate. I'm a huge hockey fan and I've never played.

My old Honda employer called me back to work today after a 10 year retirement, does that mean I'm in the industry? Lol

I work at a shop and love it but I doubt I'll ever throw a leg over another bike at the track. 23 years old and a shoulder held together by screws keeps me from riding.

I guess Jeff Gordon should be home on his couch. He should stop following the sport also. Just a guess.

F1 peeps dont have time for anything other than work. I struggled to race 10 races a year when i was doing it , my buddy who was on event IT support was away so many weekends he bought and sold a CR250 without ever starting it.

I'm 58 and haven't raced since 03. I certainly wouldn't quit watching the sport I grew up living and working in. Just cause my body doesn't cooperate anymore doesn't mean my minds dead.

I am pretty sure Weigant does ride. He just doesn't ride often. I remember hearing him talk about going riding with Nash and some other dudes in NJ a few years back. He's busy working for us. Not sure why it matters.

If you can't tell those guys love and bleed moto you've got a real issue.

New Rule: if you work in F1, you MUST put in 40 laps a year, minimum.

The industry guys that don't ride seem more grumpy/a little out of touch with the riding guys.

I still ride but did take about a year off once just because I was burned out a bit. I do see it a lot with some of the guys I work with who just don't care about riding anymore.

I think GuyB would ride more if he didn't have a glass collarbone.
