Finally I can call this restoration complete.
Or maybe I should call it restomod?
She was built as a runner, and not a show bike.
I was not concerned with keeping this bike original, so the purists will probably not like this.
Non original parts are:
RG3 Showa Diamond Kit fork
RG3 Triple clamp
Braking oversized brake disc front
Renthal bars
Hinson clutch
Keihin Airstriker carb
Boyesen Rad Valve
Boyesen Ignition and clutch cover
Pro Circuit Exhaust
Öhlins shock
VRP Alu sub frame
Tecnosel gripper seatcover (from 1990!)
SM Pro Platinum rims
Magura Hydraulic clutch

Thanks for reminding me .
The bike was a basket case when I bought it. Have done a complete teardown, and replaced everything that needed replacing. Every bearing and bushing is replaced.
Been my winter project and this is probably the 3rd Version of it.
She is my second rebuild of these 90 CR250's
Have a Team Peak/Pro Circuit replica also. But that turned out to be a too sweet bike to ride... :-)
So this was bought as a runner Project, and after riding it With original suspension....I had to Upgrade to better suspension.
Found a guy parting out a '08 CRF450R With RG3 triple and Showa A-Kit I tought, so I bought that of him. Along With Braking ovesized disc and Complete front brake.
Turned out to be a Diamond Kit fork, but in great condition.
The suspension is just lightyears better
It's the perfect combination of a restoration and addition of modern parts to make it race worthy. Great job!
A video of it in action is a requirement though.
I will see if I can get a video of it on the track :-)
This is the state it was in when I bought it last summer:
The Shop
These bikes had killer looks, and a great engine in my opinion. Suspension wise they were a bit harsh for the average rider ( if you didnt ride supercross.)
Now with upgraded suspension this bike is super fun to ride
It was pretty beat up when I got it, thats for sure.
The good thing about it was the Öhlins shock and a straight frame without cracks.
The engine was seized, but no major damage to the casings, so it was pretty easy to get it back to running condition.
Yeah, I understand completly.
I had to build this as a bike to ride as well... he he he
Your bike is just amazing and it would be a shame to ruin it.
Almost hate to see it get dirty.
I will try to adapt modern suspension on my 92 CR250, would you advice please?
Yeah, I built this because I did not want my Peak/Pro Circuit replica to get beat up.... So this one will get dirty, but it will be taken care of and not abused ;-)
Well, long story short on those seatcovers (and VRP Alu sub frame):
My racebike in 1990 was set up With that Tecnosel seatcover and the VRP Alu sub frame and a WP shock etc... during Winter of 91/92 the bike was stolen from my parents garage, and I thought it was lost for good.
But a couple of months ago it turned up for sale just an hour from me. It was just pure Luck I saw it and of course I went to get it back. The Young guy selling it was of course just one of many owners of that bike, so I paid him a small amount to get it back. He had no Clue that it had been stolen, and was of course a bit worried I might Call in the Police... He he he :-) So I got it very cheap ;-)
(I had photos to prove it had been mine..)
So thats how I got the seatcover , and fortunatly it was in mint condition!!
My race bike from 1990. Here you can see the Tecnosel seatcover.
(Me sitting with dark hair )
Here you can see the bike With a different seatcover but With the VRP sub frame and WP shock
And here is the photo from the ad a couple of months ago, and how it looked when I finally got it back after almost 23 years!!
You need to get the Complete front end of a donor bike. (Triple,forks,brake,wheel...)
Then you can get New steering head conversion bearings from All Balls racing.
My front end came of a '08 CRF450R.
You can adapt most years to fit Your bike, but look on All Balls racing site to make sure you can get Fork conversion kits.
The forks on newer CRF's are a bit longer than the old Hondas, so you need to run them 15-20mm up in the triple clamps.
so what are you doing with the actual bike u got back?
And a bit weird is that it happened at a time when I was restoring a 90 CR 250 and actually not looking for a bike ....
Just happened to help a friend look for a bike for his kid...And there she was...
Back to your question... Not sure what to do with it, I have several options.
Maybe restore it back to original as my next winter project...?
Keep it as a spare bike...?
Sell it off with another frame (I would like to keep this frame as it was "mine"... ) And keep the wife happy
I really dont know
Will be my Winter Project, and this one will probably never be used again.
This is the bike when new, and this is Close to how it will look when finished.
Pit Row
And when I saw it I knew instantly it was my old bike.
Maybe not the best quality pictures, but here you go
I also like the idea of having a show bike and a ride bike, I'm starting to understand why some people decide to just park their bikes after restoring them, especially now that I'm experiencing the effort required to complete a restoration project myself.
Great idea on the suspension upgrade too, will make that bike a ton of fun to ride
My racebike from 1990 (That was stolen and found 23 years later..) is in parts now, and the resto has begun
WP Shock rebuilt
Frame blasted and painted , so now the fun begins
Your other 90 '250 is killer, amazing spec on it! I want!!
Other than the Rg3 clamps and forks your mods are the same I run on my KX.
Great work
Glad you like them
You really put the standard waaay up there with Your Perfect bikes! I hope I can get my next one close to what you have done With Yours.
