Yes it is a PC Husky 1982, that picture we had the long pipe on. We also had the shorty pipe also, but that melted airboxs and rear fenders on a regular basis. I still have my 81 PC Husky. It's a complete original PC bike that I rode - I was supported by Payton during the early years of PC.

Saddleback is still there. A few guys went out there in 2011 and shot these...

Oh the stories... where do I begin... the bachelor parties, food fights, engine blow ups, the double decker bus incident, fishing with explosives, Troy, Corona GP, Jennings and his dog Moto... it was the best place to grow up as a teenager. All we wanted to do is race, no matter where it was being Carlsbad, Saddleback, Ascot, Corona, etc... it was about racing. Here you go, my 81 Husky. Bike was originally for Tommy Croft but he broke his leg and I got it. Rick Ash pipe, boost bottle, shot peened cases, ported and head work... it was the only bike I kept. The bike in 1981 and present day. The white fork sliders was done as an experiment in 82 to see what they might look like because the 83's would be white :

Those year Huskys were the best in my eye. They still looked like old Huskys but in a modern shape.
Tommy Croft was a big gun in early moto. Did he race again after the broken leg ?
We had a local track in New Jersey. (New Egypt Speedway) Nothing like Carlsbad. I pass it now and its a parking lot for the circle car track next to it. I look out over the gravel parking lot and think of all the great times so many of us had as a kid. I want that again

AnnieBert-that is a bitchin scooter. Thanks for posting that. I never rode a Husky, but man did I lust for one.

Moto the wonder dog... I was a grom on mini's who used to run to to the fence anytime Jennings was on the track. Funny story: When Jennings rode Suzuki he had a "MX West" sticker on his helmet---so I painted "MX East" on mine (see my avatar pic). I still have that lid. Jennings wore the JT boots with yellow ankle and shin guards---so, of course, I did too. Red/black/yellow JT pants--check. My old man thought I was crazy to single out Jennings as my favorite rider----"who the hell has what and why do you need it to go faster?" LOL. Sorry to derail the thread, but thoughts of Carlsbad/Saddleback/Ascot/Indian Dunes----even Cycle Haven really take me back to a great spot in time....

Thanks again for the pics.

I had not seen that clip! I'd welcome them back, although Miguel's Jr. is my current 'go to.'
Thanks for sharing that! I now have proof----my kids thought I made the place up! Grinning

No worries, your post showed up just fine. My deleted comment was in response to Mini Elsinore deleting his comment. He knew what I was talking about when he saw the link I posted, though, so it's all good. Beautiful bike, by the way.

Mini Elsinore: I thought you might get a kick out of that link. Glad I could help prove the existence of such a Southern California staple to your kids, too!

I want to hear about the double decker bus incident hahaha ! MORE
Let's just say the party was for someone in the industry that makes major decisions (present day) for a manufacture regarding racing. Handcuffs, a lot of $20 bills, girls with clear heals at a shoe show, a greased pig, glitter, an airplane ticket and a bunch or racers from the 80's (famous and not so famous) that pissed off the bus driver so much he pulled over on the 57 Fwy and kicked us all off the bus lol. If you made it through the night you got a finisher t-shirt as a trophy. The PC parties were legendary and all way over the top.

Very cool. Did Mikuni patronize Saddleback?
I seem to remember Glover's mom bringing the family pooch to the track?

A time or two. She was fine going out to a practice track (Mockingbird Canyon in the photo) but the sound of a full-gate o' 2-strokes starting kinda freaked her out.

Sweet pooch. She and Moto were best buds. She somehow knew the sound of my bike and would get out from the shade under the van and come running up to greet me when I'd pull in from doing a practice moto.

Sorry to resurrect this thread guys, however I wanted to share a short story with you all.
I was at LEGOLAND with my wife and kids over New Years and decided to pay my respects to the motocross Gods so to speak.
I have never been to Carlsbad before and so never saw the original track except on old vids posted on YouTube. I have however always had a fascination with Carlsbad Raceway, as a young kid the first time I ever saw MX on TV was in the movie On Any Sunday 2 where Brad Lackey featured at the USGP at Carlsbad. I was particularly amazed by Devils Drop, the freeway and huge downhills. To me it represented motocross in it's purest form incorporating all the elements, rough, fast, and challenging where your bravery was either rewarded or punished. From that point onward I was hooked on the sport and I used to imagine going to the US and riding the legendry Carlsbad track.

So on New Years day I slipped away from LEGOLAND and entered the address of the Carlsbad Raceway Business Park into my GPS and headed off. Once there I was completely disoriented and couldn't work out where the track used to be, I sat in the car and looked up old pictures of the facility until I finally got my bearings. The site has obviously been extensively redeveloped and so initially I thought there was no trace of the track remaining, I was about ready to leave when I spotted a small pocket of land that looked overgrown. With a bit more research online I recognised that it was in fact the old start straight, I jumped into the car and drove around the back of some commercial buildings, parked up the car, walked down the embankment to the old fence and climbed over.
At this point I was ecstatic that not only had I located the site of the old track but that some of it was still intact, I felt like I was 10 years old again walking the track of legends. I stood at the start gate, looked down the straight to the first turn and imagined what it would have been like to line up and battle for the holeshot, it was quite a powerful experience.
From there I walked the start straight, round the first turn, 2nd turn and following straight up until the face of the 1st jump which is where it now ends, (it's basically a swamp in there now). The whole area is really starting to get overgrown now so it was hard for me having never been there before to work out where the other parts of the track should be, however I managed to locate Devils Drop and the uphill section leading up to it. I stood on the top of the drop and thought back to when I first saw it on TV, it seemed like it was 100 feet high to me back then, but standing there on top of it I was slightly disappointed in it's real scale.

That is all of the track that still exists today, It was a very surreal experience for me, I had wanted to see this track for the last 30 years, I finally get there and it is all but gone, it is a public holiday and there is nobody around, just me and this fragment of a former motocross Mecca. I have to say my emotions turned from elation to almost sadness.

The reality is that this section of the old facility has been put aside as a nature and bird sanctuary (an agreement between the city and the developer apparently) so it will remain as is for years to come. It is almost completely overgrown now, so I am pleased I got to see it (even though just a tiny portion of it) before it disappears completely.

It's weird that this place had such an impact on me, perhaps that's just what Carlsbad does to people!

It's interesting to note that the majority of the properties have yet to be built on, seems a waste that the facility was demolished for commercial properties that nobody actually wants!

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience, here's some pics from my visit.

Don't be sorry. It was the initiation to kick off summer every year. The roar of 2 stroke 500cc's and the smell of Bel Ray. Nothin' Better.

Was a great track. Still have some old photos.

I was at both those races also and the rex staten holeshot.

If I ever make it to California this will be my first destination. As a 10 yr old watching the 1980 USGP I dreamed about racing there, that ship has sailed but I still need to see it to believe it.

I got out there for the Carlsbad Reunion just a few weeks ago, I needed to see what was there. The start straight away and first turn are there, with weeds here and there. What I took away from it was how built up the whole area is with condo developments, business parks and industrial parks. Whatever it used to be, it ain’t now. I highly recommend going to the reunion, that was fun. And I brought home a bag of dirt from the first turn.
