Frozen shock bolt

Edited Date/Time 1/27/2012 12:10pm
Hey guys,

I'm taking apart my bike to swap frames (I bought a second on Ebay and had it powder coated).

All of my axle, motor mount, and linkage bolts came out easily (and were greasy) except for the top shock bolt. It is nearly frozen. The nut came off easy but the bolt won't budge and barely spins with my long breaker bar. I lightly tapped on the end of the bolt with a hammer but it didn't move at all.

I sprayed WD-40 on it and will let it sit for a while. Are there other tricks for removing stuck bolts?

Thanks!

Check the local auto parts store for some PB Blaster penetrating oil and soak it down good overnight. Then use the big hammer. Bolt is probably corroded in the shock eyelet. Take the nut off and thread it on with the shouldered side facing out and flush with the end of the bolt before beating on it. Also use a brass or bronze hammer if available. Either way, plan on replacing the bolt and nut as somethings most likely going to get buggered! Usually helps to use curse words also....

WD-40 Has ether in it and will dry, like Newmann says, find a penetrating oil.

What happens sometimes, with a pinch type carrier, is that with wear rocking back, and forth, it gets sprung.

In your case it may be wider causing the bolt to drag on the edges of the holes. Try pinching together, the two sides, with a large C-clamp, or the like.

Good luck

Sorry if this a "master-of-the-obvious" type of reply, but is it threaded onto the frame?

I use a steel punch slightly smaller or the same size diameter as the bolt with penetrating oil. Dont hit the bolt directly with the hammer , it will expand the end of the bolt and you will never get it out , without a blowtorch.

I put penetrating oil on it this morning before I left for work. It absolutely won't budge. Sad The shock moves freely on the bolt. The rest of the bolts were still wet with grease.. what could have caused this one to freeze up? but more important, how else will I take this off?

With a second person...one twist the bolt, the other taps it through.

Be patient...it will come out.
and check them more often damn-it !

try turning the bolt using an air impact wrench and at the same time hammering on the threaded end with the nut on.

The bolt could possibly be bent? Sheer force will get it through.

The above or notched and rusted where the bolt/sleeve at eye of shock meet.
Thread side of frame mount rusted frozen on nut side.
Wish you well.
