I have a 79 Red rocket with what i think is original seatcover, but its torn..
Is there any particular value in it, if it can be repaired?
Otherwise i will just replace it.

Looks like your riding the bike. If that is the case duct tape it and pin it. Please clarify. Lot's of options for seat covers on the market for this bike. There is no fix for that. Stitch it but the foam will still get wet.

I'd just fit a new cover and foam. I had an NOS 1980 seat on my Rocket when I built it. (It cost me a LOT of money!) It lasted 2 seasons before the foam was rotten. The old and NOS foams are quite soft aswell. New foams are much firmer which, if you're tall, is a great help when trying to move from sitting to standing. I used to get cramp in my legs and struggled with transfering my weight. I was sat "in" the bike as the foam was so soft. Swapped to a new foam... never got cramp as I'm now sitting 3" higher and I can move about on the bike much easier.

TT Perra, When we do new covers or foams on Rockets we scrub the original base so it's nice and clean, and use gaffer/duct tape round the edge (the old edging tape is usually rotten aswell) The tape works really well to hold the internal nuts/mounts in position as well. These can be quite rusted and some times rotten. If these are OK re-zinc plate them as they will last a good few more years. (I make new alloy ones if they are completely rotten) I use a piece of the old cover to relpicate the extra "flap" that goes up the front of the foam. It adds a bit of extra protection to the front of the foam where it rubs against the tank.

Not sure what you mean, do you have a piece of the old cover between foam and new cover in the front?
Only the side towards the tank or on top also?

I read in another thread that you was going to make a "write up" about front brake setup, do you have any tips?
I am soon putting the front end together on the 480

I found a few photos of when did our 480 twinshock seats.

The orignal base, scrubbed clean, all the old glue and staples removed. Gaffer tape around the edges.

The internal brackets and little spacers were really rotten on these seats so I made these. If yours are good get them re-zinced as they will last a lot longer.

This is what I ment by using a peice of the old cover. Use some carpet adhesive to stick this on. It adds a bit more protection to the foam. The front face is contantly being mashed up against the back of the tank so the foam can brake down quite easily.

Hay presto! New seats!

I will be doing the 480 brake "how too". I've got one that I'm doing for a friend so I'll get some pics and it written up.
