I used to race against/with/around....

Lowell Thomspon
Brian Thompson
Larry Ward
Butch Smith
Rick Simmet
Paul Winn
Jeff Dailey
John Calhoun
Jamie Munson
Ryan Huffman
Rod Tapia
Shaun McCallister
Jason McCormick
Danny Ulven
Tony Graves
Grayson Hart

These were all guys that were either at most two years older, same age, or a couple/few years younger than me. So I raced with all of them at some point on either an 80 and/or 125 bikes.

Those were great days of motocross in the 80 and 125 ranks in the Pacific Northwest.

We had our version of Southern Cal minicyle motos up here in the Northwest when all these guys lined up for a big regional race. At the big races we would have a solid 12-15 mini experts on the line and those were great. There were a few other riders as well, but names ecscape me right now. Everyone had the one track they seemed to be better than everyone else at (home track), and we had our mix of sandy tracks, clay tracks, rocky, mud, hills, flat, etc. We had it all out here. It was a great time!

Let's talk about those 1980-90 Northwest riders. Larry Ward, Lowell Thompson, Rick Simmet, Butch Smith and Jason McCormick all won Amatuer Nationals. Eric Eaton won at Washougal National in the 80's, and I think Jason McCormick won a moto there as well.

Anybody have any great memories of these Mini experts and into their 125 rides please share them. Would love to revive some of the great memories, some of the great races from Washougal to SIR, Horn Rapids, Sandy, Moxee, Cour de'lene, Albany, Roseburg, Woodland, McMinnville, Thurston, Starbuck, Jolly Rogers, Kingdome, Monroe, Puyallup etc, etc.

What a great time to be racing. I remember watching Jason Mc Cormick rid e his 60 after he came back from Lorettas after beating or at least running with Ezra Lusk when he had the most trick DMC KX 60 and Jason was on a lightly modified one.

I think it was Jeff Daily that would never let off the throtle just pull in the clutch over all the jumps, every time I watch Barcia ride it reminds me of him with all the reving sounded cooler on a 2 stroke.

Grason Heart and Tony Graves were 2 of the nicest guys you would meet. Lary Ward would come to town and everyone was gunning fo him. Good Good times.

Let's talk about the real fast guys: Jack McGill, Steve Oster, Todd Hoover, Philip Larson, Jimmie Anderson.and Eric Hall. If you wanna talk about some of the other fast riders Larry & Lowell were fast and good. My hat goes off to both, but not mention fast NW Mini Riders these men must be mentioned as Mini Riders on the list you have posted if you wanna talk about the real old school NW. Phil Larson could ride an XR 75------er, uh, 115-------like nobody's business. One of the most seriously under-rated mini riders of all time, imo. They were monoshock, louder than hell, and battleship gray----and he never let off the throttle.

I remember Stacy Thornton...but only as a 125 Pro in 1980-81...he's got a point about the mini-experts just prior to the start of the 80's. I'm sure I remember Jimmy Anderson on mini's, and do I remember Jeff Cropper on a very very very tricked out XR75? Like with laydown forks for rear shocks?

A bunch of the late 70's mini-experts turned 125 Pro about this time seemed to have great shop classes at their high schools which a bunch fo them used to weld water jackets on their YZ125G barrels and make thermo-siphon water cooled setups.

I think it was summer of 1980 that Eric Hall reportedly had the record lap at Washougal on his YZ80.

I saw many of those riders on the bigger bikes and certainly wish I would have seen them on the Mini's back then. I came in just after or around the time most all of them moved up. Unfortunately I was too young to experience the XR era of the Mini's on the race track. Thanks for sharing!

Rick Simmet, Danny Ulven, and Chaun McAllister all used to come over to Montana in the late 1980's-early 1990's, especially when we had NMA qualifiers. Another kid on an 80cc by the name of Jimmy Lamastus also would come. The kid hauled ass on his RM80.

Grant! Long time no see, brother. Remember Dawn and Gary Piazza? We raced and rode with you back in the day. Still have some video of us riding with Jimmy Larson. We are still riding, racing, and having a blast on two wheels. Not sure if you follow supercross, but did you see Dawn on Makeup2Mud a couple of months ago? If not, here's a link...

I looked for you on Facebook but you're not listed there, at least not what I could find. Do you stay in touch with Jimmy Larson?

Hope you're well and safe and would love to hear from you, talk about the old days and share some stuff I've collected over the years with regard to bikes. I'm on Instagram as @gappman and on Facebook as well. Dawn's last name now is Stob. You can find her there as well. As for this thread, yeah, it's pretty cool. Raced with all of these dudes and I don't know if you remember, but Larry Ward and his family would stay with us when they raced Woodland or Washougal. Dawn and Larry were an item for a while.

Hope you're well and safe, and would love to hear from you.

Wow reading through this brought back some memories. Larry Ward was riding a KX60 when I was racing. Jeff Cropper and Jimmy Anderson were two of the fastest in the land. My home track was Woodland Winter track.

That's awesome, Travis! Love seeing these old photos from back in the day. Woodland was our first track as well, in 1977. Still follow Jeff Cropper, Rowdy Blasdell, Mike McCormic, Eric Hall, and Jim Anderson on social media and stay in touch with those guys. Remember clearing the doubles on my CR80 when I first got it. Ah, the good old days! Woodland still runs and I still ride out there. The trees are gone, but the track remains and is a blast to ride on. Thanks for sharing!

Right on man. Yeah Rowdy Blasdell had a bit of an advantage there at Woodland since they owned it. He rode a Husky right?
