I had one new and the only thing I remember was swapping the ignition system from a YZ 80; think same yr. or from a '82 YZ80; don't remember, but as far as finding old Wrench Reports....

Might try calling a dealer that's been around since then to see if they can help..that's if they kept past service reports.

Maybe The Pipe or Joe Newmann might know. I just remember switching ignitions to the YZ80 was one.

There is a Yamaha owners group that I posted looking for a '90 YZ250 twice in nearly two yrs. It's run by Yamaha.

Actually ,it was the YZ60 ignition that was used, not the 80. If you have an '83, check for frame breakage near and around the steering head area. Those bikes also had problems with the clutch cover in that the impeller shaft sealing was poor, resulting in chocolate milk in the transmission. The '84/85 clutch covers fit right on ,and were superior to the '83 cover.

I had an '83 back in the day. They were fast, good handling, and well suspended stock. It won the MXA shootout ,I believe. Yes ,even over the Honda.

You're right it was a YZ60 ignition, not the 80. When I posted it, I couldn't remember if was the 60 or 80 and took a shot it was the 80. The 60 ignition I only rode a few times with before I sold it.

I'd hunt any PV forums as well; a few seem well informed, some being racers from those days that would also remember stuff....

The 83 YZ 250 was my first Yamaha. I had been on KX's for 4 years before that and it took me a little while to learn that you could only turn that bike with the power on. Once I learnd that though I loved it and probably went faster on it than anything else I ever raced.
Pulled 6 holeshots in a row with it in the 83 fall Georgia series.

That would be great Barnett!! I have looked all over the internet with no luck. I can find the technical bulletin but I am looking for the "hop-up" tips.

No problem. Out of curiosity, what hop up tips are you looking for?

Mainly engine performance. Like this.

So you basically want more horsepower out of it?

OH YEA!!
I can't find it at the moment but I will look some more when I have more time, however, for now, there are a few different options. Below are just a few of them.

1. Call eric gore and tell him what you want and see what he says. Also ask him if there is room to install boyesen ports and if a 1984 cylinder and exhaust valve system will bolt up to it.

2. Get a spare standard bore cylinder just in case.

3. Install a 1984 cylinder and exhaust valve system if it will bolt on.

4. You could try some boyesen 2 stage reeds if you want more bottom end but they shouldn't make a huge difference. A V force 3 or 4 should give you a bit more power as well but if you are on a budget, you might put that $150.00 elsewhere to get more power.

5. Lengthening the head pipe by around 15 - 20 mm will basically lower the entire rpm range a little, but if your pipe is stock and mint, you might not want to chop it up.

6. If it has the original stock air filter, try pinching it then pulling on it. If a piece comes off, it is trash. Either way, I would put a uni filter on it.

Thanks for the tips Barnett. It is a 79 YZ250 as mentioned above so the 83 and 84 cylinder won't work. The tech update that I posted was just an example of what I am looking for. Not the correct year.
I will look into the boyesen stage 2 reeds and the v force. I may call Eric Gorr and see what he says.

Ok xlnt, that's even easier. I have a 1980 that had botesen ports added so i know it can be done to a 1979. My bike hauls ass and is much faster than i am capable of riding it but it is not torquey. You have to ride it more like a 1974 cr125 and use the clutch in every dingle corner.i also have to mix some face gas with 91 e85 do it doesn't ping itself to death. Im 99% certain a 1980 cylinder will fit a 79 and there was one on ebay recently. So it might be a better idea to preserve your original and buy an unported 1980 cylinder and start by just having the boyesen ports added.

Looking at the 80 cylinder, I can see it has an angled exhaust port where the 79 is straight. That would require a 1980 cylinder, head and pipe. I think I will stick with modifying the 79 cylinder.
I will ask Eric about adding the Boyesen ports.
Thanks

Ok bummer but you can make the 79 fcylinder fast as well. The boyesen ports are one of the best and safest mods imo and they shouldn't make the bike much pipier but i am interested in knowing what he says. You might also be able to add a port above the intake if it doesn't already have one and he will know about that as well but it requires a little more modification and may or may not require a reed spacer which is not often beneficial because it increases the crankcase volume. The spacers were mainly for the 77 and 78 yz400s to move the reeds rearward so they wouldn't block the factory port above the intake. You must also use the reed stop if you have the port above the intake and use boyesen dual stage reeds without the spacer, otherwise the reeds will open onto the port and can break at the ends.

Also, before you do anything, i suggest you change the gearing. These bikes are geared overaly tall. I put a 13 front on mine and a 49 or 50 rear and i use it as a 5 speed and still rarely every use 5th and it still goes at least 65 mph, lol. I got my sprockets from pbi. After you do this you might not want to port it at all but i would start with the 13 front first and leave the rear stock then change the rear afterwards if you want.

I am also running starcross tires and thin inner tubes and motion pro rim locks and this lightened the bike up by around 4 lbs. I put dirt star rims on also and this took around another 2.5 lbs off.

If you are on a mx track with some tight turns or like to take inside lines in turns, try raising your forks in the tubes as much as you can leaving around 1/4 inch between the tire and fender where the fender bolts to the lower tripple tree. I did this on mine and it now turns about as good as a maico.

I will be riding mostly in the woods and not much on the mx tracks. Lower gearing is a must, as you mentioned they are geared tall.

Thanks Gene. I looked through that site a few weeks ago and found some good info. Unfortunately, I only found service data for the 79 YZ250. A few good magazine articles though.

Thanks
