Here is my new to me 83 yz250K. Got it from a young fellow who purchased it from the
original owner. It had been sitting since 85 ,and the kid was amazed all it took to start it
was a tank of gas ,and a few kicks. He was impressed with two stroke power for a short
while as the the bike seized He put it away and and listed it on Craigslist ,and I acquired
it and found the reason for the seizure was a bad water pump seal. The bikes in amazingly
good nick. I've already have a 3rd over piston on the way ,and will be getting a new pump
seal kit this week. New Metzelers, air filter, bearings,chain/sprockets and it will be in the
dirt. A full resto will be a winters project in the Fortress of solitude! I'll update with pics.
Have a good Sunday.

I had one of those. Fast bike. I went through the water pump deal. Even had a bronze bushing installed in the shaft bore. Still had the milky transmission oil problem. The 84-85 water pump cover was updated and fits right on the K model.

That is the only way I solved my problem.

Thanks fellas! This is sure to be one of the easiest restos I've done.(famous last words)
Thanks for the heads up on the 84 clutch cover I'll be scouring eBay for that item.
Funny thing the kid said "I didn't even check the antifreeze before starting it!"

Careful on the spoke tension. Too tight and those "Z" spokes will crack the hub's spoke flanges right off.

83 doesn't have z spokes. I have a 84 and 85 with the silly z spokes. Would like to have 83 hubs for my 84. I am playing around with 87 cr 250 forks, wheel, and brake on my 85. Hopefully great forks and regular spokes to boot. The 83 rear hub will fit the 85 also. It is my goal to be z free. Z spokes are the dumbest idea ever.

Agreed the z splonk wasn't a good move by Yamaha at the time. Lots of broken hubs. The 84 250 was an exceptional bike though.

Well winter was long ,but not long enough. Never got around to doing a restore on the K. But the weather was so nice today and I had all these new engine parts in a box so. I put the engine together and the bike fired on the third kick. Runs very well Im glad to say. The 85 clutch cover with a new WP seal seems to be the hot ticket. Now for some new tires, brake shoes, ect ect,,,,, I'll be set for some summer fun. Then a spit and polish this winter.
