Alright I know there is some info here on it but I kind of wanted to consolidate it. I am in the market to possibly getting one. I am a 30+ expert/pro mxer. What do I need to get as far as performance wise? I want optimal performance. I already got a FMF pipe and silencer. Any suggestions and or experience will be appreciated.

There was a pretty extensive write up on it in MXA last month including using different pipe/silencer combos.

It gets a lot of good reviews here. I think Rocketsocks has one and so does Digger. Digger insists that once I ride the 300 kit I'll order one. We will see.

Those guys also know the hot set ups. My jetting (thanks digger) is a Suzuki NECJ needle, 175 main and 40 pilot with the 6.5 slide and air screw at 1.5 turns. Oh yeah, a 38mm carb off of a 125 helps out a lot too...

Honestly, I don't give that much at a MXA test anymore. It should be called PCAction magazine!
The different pipes consisted of stock, ProCircuit and ProCircuit...

I have a 300 kit laying around here too, but haven't ridden it. Right now the NECJ/NEDJ needle and the Doma/SXS pipe+silencer.
Which is just plain awesome, what a motor! And I'm coming from a Eric Gorr YZ300...
I'll never run a PC or FMF on that bike (had lots of them on my 250 twostrokes...)
Try this pipe first if you're not sure about the 300, it's the pipe from the powerparts cataloge and the one that Cairoli and a lot of real racers use. Like the Australians and the Austrians when they ran 250 2strokes in their championship (Markus Mauser and co).

But I'll try the 300 soon after I get my flywheel weight and I'll also get my buddy to ask they guys at KTM (he knows them...), what they will use in the 300 European races.

Greetings from Germany

In my humble opinion it's the best money that you'll ever spend and the most bang for the buck ever on the KTM250SX. Do it and don't lose a moments sleep over it. I've ridden plenty of big bore 2 strokes and I built an RM300 (which I hated) and I've never really liked any of them until now so of course I was VERY skeptical about the 300SXS kit and waited way way longer than I should have to get it. KTM did a great job on their 300SXS kits. It's comes with a number of base gaskets which allows you to set the cylinder height correctly (very important to get the most performance from the kit) The bike didn't require any jetting changes and the HP increase is immediately noticeable. It's got more bottom and a lot more in the middle and it seems to rev just as far as my 250 did and make great power there but we'd need to dyno it to see if I'm actually correct on that one. My bike is 450 fast now and just way more fun to ride/race than any 450 that I've ridden. I get tons of holeshots now and can zap a 450 coming into almost any turn. I can dive deeper and out brake them into almost any turn at all the tracks that we race at. I can go places on the track that no 450 can go and do it in moments notice. The bike is easier to ride because the power becomes way more flexible and luggable. The bike just feels like a VERY angry 250 now and doesn't feel like the typical 300 big bore. I feel that the pipe/silencer combos is pretty subjective and is really more of a personal preference thing. I like the PC combo with the 300 kit but I liked the FMF combo when it was a 250.

Absolutely worth the money! Makes the bike very enjoyable and easy to ride off the bottom end!! I used to pull 450's with mine! Like digger says, the Pro-circuit pipe is the one to have with the 300!! On top of the 300 kit buy the 38mm carb from the 125sx and the thing will be a space ship! Enjoy, don't look back and make sure you post the picture after the first time you ride!!!

My dad always told me, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission. And my dad and I always have cool toys....

I read a lot about the vibration of it being very noticeable. As far as jetting did you go up or down? I am at 172 main, stock pilot and the suzuki needle and it runs great. Other then a 125 carb anything else i should get for it?

If vibration is an issue, use the ktm power parts rubber bar mounts. Should be around $200 retail, but it's money well spent.

after looking at Diggers bike about 400x i pulled trigger on a 300SXS kit myself. Riding it for the first time this weekend. so will let you know how it is. I'm a larger guy, 6'3" 230# and i thought a stock jetted 250sx pulled hard. I think i'll be blown away this weekend.
-300SXS kit
-38mm Keihin air striker carb ( i tried finding one off ebay no luck off a 125sx, ended up getting a new one for 200$ which i would have paid for the 125 carb anyway)
- NECJ needle and 175 main
-going to try 14/50 gearing after talking to Digger

ouch are they really 200$ for those mounts? sounds like it would be cheaper to buy an applied top clamp with rubber mounts almost.

I think I saw them online for around $160-$169. There were some slightly used ones on ebay not too long ago, don't know if they are still there.

well. tried to put on my 38mm air striker tonite only to find that the stock KTM carb is 75mm long inlet to outlet. EVEN THOUGH on keihin's website it shows their PWK 36mm as having the SAME specs as the 38mm. The 38mm i just got in is 91mm long. big difference.
so looks like keihin is supplying ktm with modified versions of the pwk carb for fitment or something?
now looks like i have 2 options. modify the airboot to fit my AS carb, or try and find a OEM KTM one on ebay which there are none of. damn.

They really are that expensive at full retail. A shop can probably offer you some kind of deal on them. They work well though.

Here they are for $170.19

I was pretty sure that I told you that you needed the KTM 125/150SX carb and not just any 38MM Keihin carb. I tried one off of an 08 YZ250 and it was definitely bigger and I had to wedge it in there to try it and once I did I knew it was the way to go so I bought the 13 KTM 125SX carb. I just put some new graphics on today. I definitely love them BUT they are a little loud.. :-)

Digger: Who did your graphics?
139 Designs in Vermont. Chris has such a great eye for this stuff. His prices and turn around are awesome too. Call him and please tell him that I said to. Thanks, Mike

Bike looks good as usual Digger. Since I am not racing this year due to the club here being a bunch of money hungry assholes I am not going to drop the coin on it and wait till next summer when I move back to Reno and start racing again. I will just stay a professional practicer and ride all summer.
So with that said I am now planning a trip to the Millville national with some friends in the lower 48. Pretty excited to watch the boys on a track I have never been to. Thank you again for all the insight and i will be looking to get one at a later date.

Installing my 300 today and it came with no documentation on the X dimension (piston to top of jug measurement at top dead center).

Curious what you boys setting it at. And if you are setting it to top of cylinder or that slight bevel? Any help would be great appreciated.

i put a level block across my jug and got it where it almost touched. so just a couple thou below 0.
lay out all your gaskets in order after you measure them with a caliper and i wrote on each one the thickness, that will save some time in getting the combo that will get the closest. and then keep track of what the combos net in relation to deck height. i probably pulled the head off 10 times haha! so be careful not to tear a gasket coming on or off with it.

I didn't have a 250–300, just a normal 300 with the full mule head work done by Jeff Slavens.

Best.

Motor.

On.

The.

Planet.

Not kidding. You will fuckin love a 300.

i put it on and dont know if it was a placebo but i didnt like it. i felt like it took some of the balls away. so put my 250sx ignition back on and digging that.

Good deal. I thought I had read that it wasn't needed.
