Found me a nice 05 yz250 for $1800 that I'm going to give it my best to make it look new. I want to put the newer forks and plastic kit for sure. I started tearing it down yesterday and ended my night with a seized swing arm pivot bolt but I soaked her overnight and it came fairly easy today! I'm having a blast with this and love looking what you other guys have done to your builds! Now it's time for cleaning and ordering parts! This is my first build so I might need some tips! Haha

How are you cleaning your motor? Elbow grease or bead/soda blaster? I have never done it but I've seen guys in these threads cover up the open ports and blast the cases clean which would be nice. My 125 I used a scotch bright and aluminum cleaner and a lot of cold beer. I got them looking nice but still am not able to get in the tight spaces.

I've converted two bikes 05 250 and 05 125 to the SSS setup. It's not difficult but if you have any questions feel free to ask. I also have info on the 09+ Swingarm upgrade if your interested in that!

Look forward to watching the build.

A lot of elbow grease for sure! I am going at it right now with this stuff called aluminator, put it on with a rag and wipe it off with a damp rag. The spots that are worse I just use a wire brush or scotch bright, and it's looking pretty good so far! For the hard to get to spots I'm going to get my dremel tool and see what happens but it should turn out pretty good. Yea, let me know about that swingarm upgrade, I'm all ears! Thanks
Oh yea, on the fork conversion I was thinking of getting forks off eBay and using the clamps off my 450 if they will work and getting a new aftermarket set for the 450. What all do I need to know about that whole setup?

That's some good looking stuff, I would definitely be interested in the shock because the one I have is leaking. That would be almost as cheap as rebuilding the one I have because I have to get someone to rebuild it since I don't know what I'm doing and would have to buy the tools haha. I have another question about the air box, I'm going to get the whole box off bto if the sub frames are the same as the 16's because the old box is busted?

The sub frames are the same as the 16. For the plastic swap you just need the air box, rear fender and number plates. You can remove your old mounts and insert them into the new air box.

If that's your 450 in the background the clamps are different. The 06-09 4-stroke clamps are what you want for 06-07 & 08-09 forks. The 125/250f steering stem is shorter than the 250/450 steering stem. 06-07 forks will bolt up to your current front brake/wheel set up. If you get 08-09 forks you will need new front brake, axle and spacers. The 2010 + 450 used a different offset triple and (pretty sure) different outer diameter fork tubes. Not 100% sure on the 250f years. All 2 strokes 08+ have the same set up.

Thanks for the info mattman and everyone else! This is what I have done with the engine in the last little bit, think it's looking pretty good considering it was pretty nasty

How much including shipping? The guy on ebay that sells the kit with airbox is out right now (except white), said he will be getting more in at the end of the month.

I used aluminator, this stuff works! I clean our tractor trailer wheels with it. All I did was put it on a rag and rub it down and spray it off with the hose pipe. For the cavities I put it on a paper towel and rubbed it in and sprayed it off! After that I scrubbed it with SOS pads, I just finished the subframe and stuck it on there to see what it looks like.

Yes 06-09 YZ/YZF 450 clamps. The 125/250F clamps will work but you will have to use your existing steering stem. I might actually have an extra set laying in the shop. I can check when i get home.

Ok thanks! What about the rear shock, what years will work 250f or 450? I just want to know about that stuff before I waste my time and have to send something back. Thanks again

Rear shock is the same as far as fitment goes. I had a 450 shock on my old 250 and I swapped it back and forth for my 125 a few times. If your going to have it re-sprung and/or re-valved then it wont matter which shock you get.

Ok thanks, the shock I have needs rebuilt. I found some on eBay that look way better than this one for almost as cheap as a rebuild on this one. I just wanted to make sure that nothing was different and I will at least spring it for my weight

Your stock clamps will work great with my 06 125 set up and if you give me my asking price on the set I'll ship them free.

I believe the shock alone would cost you about $35-$40 if you would just want the shock.

I believe the set to be low hours, the shock body has no wear where my 50 hour 450 was rubbed through the anodizing. Of course it is hard to compare riding styles. My set with original Titanium spring shock off a 125 may match up well for you. What's your weight and speed?

Oops, I got you confused with another thread thinking you had an 05 125. My SSS for the 125 set up will slide right in your existing clamps, wheel and caliper setbup.

Mattman, i do know the 06 07 yz450f uses a longer steering stem then the 08 and 09 yz450f'

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it! If you wanted to let the shock go by itself what do you want for it? If you wanted to let it go you could keep the spring because I'm about 220lbs so I would need a 5.9 or 6.0 shock spring

Well, for sure $150 + shipping Lol...
I'll see what the opportunity is for moving that stock spring. I also have a live one that claims to want the set. I'll be back at ya, thanks!

As far as I know 06-09 450 use the same steering stem. Worst case you press your current stem out and into the new clamps. Also I looked last night and I have a bottom clamp with stem but no top clamp...

Ok, I got some stuff done today, not much but considering how the wiring looked before I started I'm pretty happy! I have the boyesen clutch, ignition, and water pump coming in the next couple days! It's getting there I just need and want more parts! Haha
