19 YZ450 Fork Assembly

Probably did something dumb here. Need some help.

I got some new springs for my forks. I separated the tubes by removing them from the rebound end to keep the oil inside. It was difficult to separate the fork tubes but they came apart eventually. Now I cannot get them back together. Looks like there is another bushing (metal slide maybe) still inside the upper tube. How do I get this out and what was the correct way to separate the forks to avoid this happening in the future?

Sometimes instead of the slider bushing pulling out the outer bushing, the slide bushing will just jerk right through the outer bushing. That is probably what happened and why it was so hard to pull it out. You'll have to find something with fingers that can grab the bushing and pull it out of the tube. Be very careful not to scratch the inside of the tube! If you can get under the corner of the bushing where the split is in it you might be able to bend it inwards a little and make it looser.

I dont like changing springs this way. Only time i seperate the tubes. Its to change all the bushings and seals. In my opinion it does some damage to the bushings when seperated.

If anyone finds themselves in a bind like this, a bit of heat on the outer tube and the bushings came out super easy with a long nose pliers
