purpose of the cut out in the side of 2 stroke piston

just bought a new piston and it doesn't have the cut out like the other one does anyone the purpose of this what difference does it make

I could be completely wrong, thought I read it in A Graham Bell tuning book, were used in possibly kart engines, last year I did talk to a guy at wossener about lightening a 72mm piston, he said the pockets in there were pretty much at there limit before it compromises strength.

so its only a weight thing then wonder why wiseco didn't bother with them i borrowed my friends scales so i could compare weight of wiseco and vertex i didn't think it was too bad considering its forged vs cast

It's for extra crankcase compression. At least that's what the ads used to say. I wouldn't worry about it.
