"Feds uncover Kwame Kilpatrick cash in ongoing treasure hunt stemming from corruption case.
Detroit — Federal prosecutors have discovered more than $6,700 during a hunt for money belonging to former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick that they want applied toward the more than $820,000 he owes taxpayers as part of the disgraced politician's landmark public corruption conviction.
The money was discovered in late March after prosecutors ordered Michigan Treasury officials to hold onto any money that might belong to Kilpatrick, including unclaimed property or tax refunds.
The cash discovery is the latest development in a years-long attempt to hold accountable a corrupt politician that prosecutors portrayed as an unremorseful ex-con who has lied in the past about his ability to pay restitution while pursuing a life of luxury. That includes leasing a $90,000 luxury SUV last year, several months before his wife's consulting firm bought an $807,000 home in Novi while the former Detroit mayor continues to owe more than $1.6 million in restitution to taxpayers and back taxes.
Former President Donald Trump commuted the sentence in January 2021, but Kilpatrick was still required to pay restitution, which has shrunk in size since government officials seized construction equipment belonging to co-defendant Bobby Ferguson."
