Good day all. Been riding since 1999, grew up on mostly tight woods and fields. Got into moto hardcore in 2015, roughly 98% of my riding has been moto since. I can survive and safely circulate mid/back of the pack at a local B race.  As I age and buy more land, I am enjoying the woods more more again. I want to take a legitimate stab at the gncc series next year. Hell, maybe race em all.. But, I have some questions..

How in the hell do those guys go SO FAST??? The last gncc I did, I got my ass handed to me with a 5th in my class. I feel like I have above average technique with regards to body positioning. I've worked very hard on it through moto. I grew up on very tight trails and feel like I excelled against my competition in those sections. But man they were chewing me up in the open stuff. Also I had a terrible time getting around people.. that was my biggest struggle. I felt I rode 75% speed because every inch of the track was covered in riders! I set my bike up for my trails because I have no other gauge to go off of (smooth, ruts in corners, and tight).

So, what specific tips do yall have to go faster and get around people? Am I not looking far enough ahead? Am I running my suspension too soft? Is my reaction time just slow?  Am I just a bitch?

I'd appreciate some specific tips! Thanks. Worst case it gives me something to read lol

You should probably start with some regional Hare scramble / XC races. You are in an excellent location for IXCR series races, which are very much like GNCC's. They are racing not far from you next weekend at Barbersville, IN.. And of course, there's the Ironman coming up. It would be good practice for next year.

I would think your moto experience would be good for the open stuff. You just have to pin it on that stuff. Maybe find some dirt roads and scare yourself a bit.

Like anything, it just takes practice.

The best way to get faster is to ride with riders that are faster than you.  Follow them and watch their lines and get use to riding at a faster pace.  It will help pick up on breaking points and how to carry speed.
