was going to say the same thing with BMX
also and alley-oop on a quarter has got to be one of the coolest feelings ever
Yes it is.
With the risk of studworx calling me a liar i would say i can put it flat both ways.
But they won’t look the same when i do them and a left side whip will always feel more natural to me.
I only scrub in one direction.
Agree to disagree I guess. Knock yourself out. Make 3 entire threads about the same thing.
The Shop
where is the option for I can't whip it either way ?
I call what I do "mini scrubs". The bike's nowhere near flat, but it rotates and leans one direction, then I put it back before landing.
I think it does keep the bike a little lower. I can do them just as well either direction.
I'm working on it!
Can’t whip, but I’ve mastered the cross-up.
Like 1970, baby
Entirely dependent on terrain and corner/straight away before. There are some jumps that I could crank it one way but not even entertain the thought of going the other way. Contrary to that, there are jumps that I could whip either direction off of.
For the fun of it... I refer to the whipping direction in correlation with the direction I lean. I.E. if I'm whipping to the left, the back end is out to my right. I see the argument for both, I don't think there is a correct answer... I'd rather go throw a fat one than argue about it anyhow.
Here's one from last weekend at our RacerX Inter-Am Vintage event in Boise... '96 WR250.
^To be 100% honest, I can see both sides of that particular argument, too. I'm usually willing to fight to the death about something, but on this one, I'm only siding with the "direction you are turning" definition because that's what I've used to describe the action of laying the bike over. This was long before people started calling it a "whip" in MX parlance.
Bringing the attention to the front of the bike would add to that argument as well. The way the handlebars turn (or lean, at least) to initiate the whip would be consistent with this side of the argument. The only thing validating the opposite argument is the rear end. Either argument is true depending on these parameters... I went down the rabbit hole without intending to...
Its a "tail whip".. What part is confusing you guys? Its the side that the tail whips to...its literally in the name of the action you are performing. There is no front wheel or turning argument involved with the question "what side did you whip the tail?" I whipped it to the right. (so the rear end of the bike is WHIP'd out to the right).
Which way do you press the joy sticks on a video game to whip left?
I go with that train of thought as well (I don't see how anyone wouldn't, but I appreciate we're all different) as if you turn the bars left, you turn left. If you are in a corner, turn left, give it the berries, the back end steps out to the right, you are still turning left (and hopefully that continues until the end of the corner).
Edit. Continue that whip until it's a 180 or 360 and it answers the question categorically 👍
So if you’re carving up the face of the jump to the right (initiating a right turn) you’re actually whipping to the left?
I’ve always referred to the direction the front of the bike goes. Front goes right, bike leans to the right and rotates clockwise, rider is hanging off the right side of the bike = whipping or scrubbing to the right. The back end of the bike just follows what the rest of the bike is doing.
Everything involved with whipping to the left as some would say involves a rightward motion and a clockwise rotation
edit: switched up CW and CCW
I’m not judging, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone scrub with a kickstand.
Good form, though.
I think you got your clockwise and counterclockwise's mixed up. None of that first counterclockwise sentence makes sense.
You said:
-Front goes right (that's clockwise, not counter-clockwise)
-bike leans to the right
-and rotates counterclockwise, (no its clockwise... are you doing a barrel roll?
-rider is hanging off the right side of the bike = whipping or scrubbing to the right.
I did and fixed it
Sick!
Pit Row
I get it. It makes sense that it's a tail whip, so the direction of the tail determines the direction of the whip. Whip the tail to the right, it's a right whip. But, what's confusing is that doing almost the same exact action in a scrub, it's a left scrub. I can't imagine calling a scrub to the left a right scrub. It's not a tail scrub.
Should we have the 'Roost' vs. 'Rooster Tail' discussion in parallel here, or start a separate thread?
my butt whips go in either direction 😂
I don’t know whether it’s called left or right (leaning left with the ass swinging to the right) but I could lay em down pretty decent back in my day on the right jump. Never could get comfortable going the other way.
Back in my day, we called it a tabletop. As in, lay the bike over flat like the top of a table. You would definitely name that trick like the direction your bike is turning.
When riders started really throwing the rear end out, I think it started the confusion. We're talking about the difference between roll (tabletop) and yaw (whip).
Do you guys who call it a "tailwhip" picture this trick more like a BMX tailwhip, wherein you are not leaning the bike sideways much or at all? That makes more sense to me if you're saying rear wheel to the right = whip to the right.
