Long short story, My 2017 YZ250F was stolen about a year and a half ago. With some dumb luck I was scrolling through FB Marketplace and came across what looked to be my old bike. Went to the guys house the next day and sure enough the vin was a match and still had most of my parts on it. I really couldn't believe that i got it back but it looks like its been 12 o' clocked bike life' d to death. The bike runs and doesn't smoke so i changed the oil and popped off the clutch cover to see what kind of shape it was in. Then i was greeted to this. Looks like the main shaft snapped!?! I'll have the GYTR tuner by Saturday so i can see how many hours are on it.

NOT SPOKE-SKINS!!!

Well at least you've got your bike back, most importantly.

Yes called the police as soon as I read the vin they showed up in 5 min was awesome. Haha these spoke skins are a pain in the ass to remove. They where the first thing into the trash.

Took it down to the frame for the rebuild. Can’t believe it didn’t blow up with this many hours on it.

Damn, almost 250 hrs on original piston?

I have heard of this every now and then from other yzf owners.

I had an 02 yz250f and rode raced for a year, probably 50+ hrs. Ran into the guy a few years later and still had been riding on original motor, figured he put 200 plus on it

Yeah original everything! Waiting on a case spreader then I’ll send the crank and head off to get a new rod and a valve job.

Got the cylinder ready to go. Lucky my neighbor had the right size ball hone. Wheels trued up, need some new bearings for the rear wheel.

Got the crank rebuild by Ken O Conner racing in CT. Radiators came out sick thanks to ICW. Cases are prepped waiting on some of the bearings. Hopefully have the bottom end back together by end of the week.

Awesome you got her back! How much of a hassle was it? I assume the guy you got back from wasn’t the one that stole it?

Getting the bike back from the cops was easy took a couple days. Who knows if he’s the one that stole it everybody has a story.

Shift forks are giving me trouble. The clutch side spins fine but the other side is binding up. Everything looks like it lines up but when I put the case halves together the trans locks up.

*User error put a gear on backwards 🤦🏻‍♂️
all good now.

Picked up a GYTR head with copper seats for cheap. Got it assembled with new valves, springs and got my shims ordered. Waiting on a crush washer for the bottom end.

Got the engine built with the gytr head but after I checked the piston to valve clearance it was about .020 too close on the intake and exhaust. Used the standard head and got the engine back together.

Had some more time after Christmas to do the forks. Got the Zeta free pistons from the wife for Christmas and used a Yamaha fork rebuilt kit to put them back together.

Thanks guys was a labor of love! 99% done!! Started it up and it runs sweet. Waiting on my number graphics to come in. Did two 10-15 min break in rides on it and changed the oil. All looks good 👍🏼
